to the footofgod, you shouldve just punched it on the original hill you tried and showed that 1st gen up!! all you needed was a more speed at the start dont be affraid to use the power the 4runner has its not gonna hurt itself :hatsoff:
with open center diff's front and rear hill climps like these, the only way to do it is with wheel speed and momentum. if you hit the brakes on the hill your done back up and try again. if you try to crawl and start spinning your done back up and try again. I typically run trails in 4lo 3rd or 4 gear A/T taking a hill climb like that in a straight drive i would either start with enough room to shift up to third or work the clutch right to start in 2nd gear get the rpms up an if you can get into third gear you'll walk all over hills.
with that said you can understand why people add lockers to these trucks it turns that said hill into a speed bump to crawl over lol. (check out ARB's website and watch there video's on lockers) but the best thing is you got your 4runners out for some excercise that im sure they enjoyed greatly!
What they need is a 4th Gen!
I saw this episode of Stuntbusters on TV. Here's a clip Stuntbusters you can probably find the full episode too. I think there was a better explanation on the full episode that I saw.
Here they test 3 cars on a steep incline. Honda civic, Range Rover and Subaru WRX. The subaru wins. The explanation is that with the 4x4 Range Rover the front and rear axles can't rotate independently. So if lets say the rear axle gets bogged down the front axle can't continue to rotate and help pull up. The AWD subaru, with a center diff, allows the front and rear axles to rotate more or less independently. So if the rear axles gets bogged down, the power can still go to the front and maybe help pull it up. I thought Range Rovers also had AWD mode..? Also the Subaru looks like the only one that built up some speed.
