Driving while parking-brake is on brake

I just bought a new 4runner. The other day I pulled up from a parking, reverse, and drove for about 20 feet when I realized that the parking-brake is on. I stopped right away and turned off the parking brake. Do you guys know if that will cause any damage to the car?

My wife loves to do this ......... I just "Snap" when she does it ........ If you catch it right away you will be fine just ask my wife!

From day one I have said my 4th gen needs some sort of alarm when you keep the park/brake on. My darn old 99 Buick regal had one for god sake!

Camprunner is right -- no damage to the truck. 20 feet is really nothing. Don't worry about it.

Thanks guys. I wish 4runner have a automatic parking brake release once you drive off. But, I still love it!

Just shows how poor the 'parking brake' is on the 4th gen, when you can take off with it on and not realize it for a while.

Right - I've been in rental cars before where the parking brake automatically disengaged when you put the transmission in drive.

Then again, years ago I worked with someone who bought a used Mercedes. While he was test driving it, there was a red light on the dash. When he returned to the owner, he asked what the red light was for -- the response, "I have no idea." Turns out it was the parking brake warning light -- the owner had driven for a couple of years with the parking brake on and never knew it. :bash:

I've done it twice, heard a knocking sound in the rear both times, disengaged and it was all good. No knocks, break works. It was never that great of a parking break, though.

I have done this once. My problem is that my wife likes to use the emergency brake but barely pushes the pedal enough to engage it. When you drive off after she sets the brake you can hardly tell it is on. The good thing is the parking brake is a small drum brake inside the rotor for the disc brakes. The emergency brake has nothing to do with the main brakes. For a short distance no harm was done.

I got in the truck after valet parking and the parking break was on just slightly.

Promise to never use valet parking again - if that's the only choice then I'll go somewhere else.

I got about a quarter mile down the road and there was a sound and feel just like a flat tire on the rear. Only worse - terrific racket and jolting.

My theory is the brakes heat up unevenly and one grabs harder than the other and the electronic limited slip differential emulator kicks in.

I took the rotors off and checked and everything looks OK. Never got hot enough to create any unusual smell.
