Driving with no rear driveshaft

I'm looking at purchasing a 3rd gen that needs some work. Currently, there is an issue with the Ujoint on the rear driveshaft. Instead of having it towed, I would like to just remove the driveshaft and drive it home .... about 30miles. It seems like this is do able, but just wanted to confirm. Any issues with fluid loss?

I'm assuming it's a 4wd. It's possible with a few caveats. If it's a standard j-shift (96-00 SR5/Base) then put in 4HI. If it's a 99-00 Limited then put it in 4HI Locked (j-shift pattern with a button on the side of the shift handle). If it's a 01-02 you'll need to have it in 4wd WITH the center diff lock engaged.

The transfer case uses a flange for the driveshafts to mount to so you won't lose any fluid.

Make sure you are either already in 4wd or you chock the wheels before removing the rear driveshaft.

Also, in case you have to get a replacement driveshaft there are several different lengths so make sure you get one from your year range/transmission/transfer case.
