the smell is normal, some smell it others don't. I've found mid-grade gas to be helpful in reducing the strength of the smell. You'll notice the smell more often coming from a stop and acelerating or anytime you acelerate hard. the smell goes away quickly with the windows down once you get out of the throttle.

I drive with the tailgate window down all the time because my dog likes to hang his head out the back. I got the exhaust smell until I cut the exhaust pipe right after the bend that goes over the axle. You can either do that or have the tail pipe re-routed to exit on the side.

haha yeah i forgot to add that i cut mine off a while back and now the smells really gone. i still use the mid grade engine just seems to like it more than regular. can't tell a dimes worth difference though between premium and midgrade, well other than the dimes coming out of your pocket for the premium lol.
I can smell exhaust when I drive with it rolled down. I can leave it a little cracked, but not much. It's not so bad when I leave all the other windows up. Only time I drive with it open is to evacuate the hot air after its been sitting in the sun. After the temp equalizes with outside air I close it up and turn on AC. That was one of the two selling points when I chose T4R over Xterra.

I smell it if I have the window all the way down, what I like to do is pop the sunroof to the up position, and crack the rear window and get a nice airflow pulling through the car. Usually don't smell it then. I've been debating on doing the exhaust reroute to the side.

One of the main buying points to me was the ability to roll down the rear window(you don't find this option much) but when the chance/need comes to re-rout the exhaust to the side I will.

Hi. I had "the smell" pretty bad when I purchased my 2006 v8 se here a couple months back. Low miles. I replaced the stock muffler and removed the resonator to do a 70 degree bend side exit. I still smell "the smell" while driving in town and especially when I get on the throttle.

I'll crack the rear window a bit when I want to stop the thumping noise from having the back seat windows open for my dog. The only time I notice the sulfur smell is when I'm on the throttle, like going up a hill or accelerating from a stop light.
To the poster who mentioned the TSB for the cats, is that something Toyota picks up the tab for?

Whether it smells or not, driving with the tailgate down will bring exhaust into the vehicle, which is not a good thing. This is simple aerodynamics and why it is called the station wagon affect. And it is why the 4Runner manual says that you should not drive with the rear window down.
