I got a Droid for Christmas and am definitely enjoying it.

I just wanted to see how many others had one and what apps and such you like to use.

I am going to shoot myself. at work everyone who has a droid tournments me about owning an iphone and they run up to me and constantly ask me, can your iphone do turn by turn direction!?!?!? umm i dont know, i have a gps in my car. OH OH well DROID DOES!!

I have the HTC Hero which runs the Droid platform and software and I love it;I've got 7 screens to use for my desktops and built in ringtone trimmer can make any song I export onto my SD card as a ringtone which the iPhone cannot do.
I can also run apps simultaneously and swap music and pics even during a phone call.
The iPhone does have better apps overall in part because Apple controls the quality and is a smoother platform but the Hero suits my needs better and isn't as locked down as an iPhone. The iPhone is an iPod with a phone but the Droid simulates a laptop experience better IMO.

My apps include:
Android Lightsaber - I'm a bit of a Star Wars geek
Color flashlight
Bubble level
FX camera - adds a bit more to the on-board camera
Flixster - for movie times,trailers
NFL Mobile live,SprintTV and Sprint GPS - built in
Photoshop mobile
Photobucket
Pandora
Steamy window - just to show off for fun
Teeter - ball balancing maze game
Zombie Run - A fun game using GPS and requires you to get from point A to point B avoiding a mapful of zombies.

I also have a fuel mileage app which tracks everything tank to tank and the Sprint GPS is much better than I would've expected.

I tried the ringdroid app and it was a bit harder to use compared to the built in HTC trimmer. The HTC version lets you hear it as you adjust it and with no scrolling screen and can be done with two fingers on one hand but the ringdroid does work fine but could be simpler.

I also found an inclinometer,it's pretty basic but it was free and they do have a pro version for $2.99 but i bet in the next year you'll see better versions and maybe one specifically made for off road vehicles.

My Hero also has a pdf viewer but haven't tried it yet,wi-fi works great but using my home connection doesn't seem much faster than Sprints 4G network.

This is my secondary screen;the other 6 screens are used for a phone number widget,calendar widget,my home screen for main apps and shortcuts,one for tools,bookmark widget for internet sites and still have one blank. I love being able to download pics and trim and set as my desktop background.

The Droid is interesting, upgrading to that for my next phone. It'll certainly take over as a dominant smartphone OS. Hopefully, HTC will launch a Droid with the Touch Pro 2 form factor.

I totally forgot about this thread.

I'm going on two months now and am loving it.

It's so fast and smooth. I love having Verizon's fast 3G and also Wi-Fi.

The battery life was questionable the first few days, but it has changed. The better life is pretty good for a smart phone. I can go a day or more pretty easily.

I think the apps for the Droid are pretty good. Not as many as the iPhone, but a lot of the ones for the iPhones are really stupid. I'm sure that they will get better.

I'm ready to get Flash and 2.1.

I thought I would revive this thread with a couple of Android Apps that you all might find useful. ( all of these are free to use)

Torque- A must have for any car nut

Scanner Radio- A scanner for all emergency traffic in your area

The Weather Channel- Self explanatory

Radar Now - Doppler that runs off your GPS location

Google Maps -

profile manager

Does anybody know of a good profile manager? I used to have a BB curve and you could set it to normal, loud, silent, phone only, etc. I want to be able to set it as phone only so folks can reach me at night if needed but I don't want it to buzz every time an email comes through.
I have found "quick profiles" which is almost perfect, but it does not allow you to toggle vibrate on/off for notifications.
Any suggestions?

better not, wait for a few month all of the new amazing stuff is coming out in march and june using the new 4d/lte network the deal is that 3g and 4g use separate radios in the phone so a 3g phone WILL NOT WORK on the new network but the 1st generation of 4g/lte phones will be 3g compatible carrying both radios.

the point i'm trying to make is that tech normally has a relevant life span of a few years before it becomes outdated and basically useless, if you buy a 3g smarthpone now you're basically buying a vhs tape player when the worlds is jumping to dvd in the next few months, your basically setting yourself up to have to buy a new device sooner then normal, like you'll be wanting the 4g phone in about 6-8 months and if your locked into a 2 years contract that's going to suck balls.

it's an odd time in the tech world right now, everything is changing and doing so in a way that is a bit different then the normal cycles i'm used to seeing.


that said check out the new phones from for verizon coming out in the next few months, you'll see why as well getting a driod x or glaxay s is a stupid move at this point, and i own both of those phones. driod x and the fascinate both rooted running foyo 2.2, i don't like custom rom's i just root install the latest os and delete bloatware.

The new 4G phones should be interesting. I think I'm eligible for a new phone around Christmas time. Hopefully there will be some awesome, fast phones out by then.

Has anybody upgraded from their Droid to either another Android device or the iPhone?

At first the speed of the Droid was fine for me, but after using other phones I have seen how slow it is.

Q2 and Q3 will be an exciting time for Androids. LG has announced their dual core Android, Optimus 2x. More players are coming to market with dual core chips, Qualcomm and the new Tegra. The Moto Atrix is an interesting concept.

Some say Google may require that Honeycomb will only run on dual core devices with a 720p display.

Can't wait to see what HTC, LG and Samsung's road maps look like.

I have the Moto Droid and switched to an iPhone on the day it came out.

The iPhone is truly awesome, but not where it counts. I consistently dropped data connections, I could not make a call without dropping it at home, and I couldn't receive calls at home without having to hang up and redial. The iPhone's radio just can't compete with the Motorola's. I also missed the Google apps from the Android. The iPhone's stock IMAP e-mail client is just not that great. Also no navigation, iOS notifications suck, etc.

Supposedly the new iPhone will have a Qualcomm radio, which may help with the reception issues I encountered. However, a lot of the issues are also due to the same design flaw that people found on the AT&T version with the "death grip". Most people will claim that the "death grip" can produce the same results on all phones, but I have not found that to be the case.

That being said, Android is a terrible battery hog. I average 20 hours on my Droid with a slight overclocked low-voltage kernel. It helps the speed issues you mentioned, but probably doesn't help with battery consumption. The iPhone lasted me an entire weekend on a single charge with heavy use.

As Uneek said, Android has some awesome stuff coming in the next few months. I'm looking forward to that. I think the Android platform is a better fit for me.

Did you have the iPhone on AT&T or Verizon?

My Droid battery blows. I can't even get a day out of mine. If I'm using the internet a lot then I probably can't get even half a day.

I had the iPhone on Verizon this past weekend before taking it back on Monday. I was an AT&T customer a few years ago and had the iPhone 3G, but the service was so bad I switched to Verizon.

I can get a full day out of my Droid, but it's rooted and running a low voltage kernel. Now, if I tether to my laptop or use the Internet constantly, it becomes a few hours. But with 3G turned on and normal usage, I average about 18-20 hours.

There is a app called "profilemanager" (its icon looks like a green eighth note over a blue speaker horn). It lets you set profiles, and you can adjust what time of day which profile is on.

There is also a toggle app that lets you swithch from silent, vibrate, and normal.
