Drone while coasting

Nothing worse than a sound you can't diagnose...

I'm hearing a drone/humming noise while coasting. I believe it's from the front end.
Not really noticeable until you get over 20mph. Upon acceleration it's drowned out. It's a bit higher pitched than a tire drone. Goes away under 20mph.

Last week spent 5+ days in sub 0* temps, this week heavy snow 20's-30's.
I'm wondering if the cold/snow got in somewhere? Wheelbearing?

Jack up the front end and give each wheel the shake test? 3 and 9 o'clock and then 12 and 6 o'clock.

Sounds like a wheel bearing if I had to guess based on the 2 sentences you provided.

My front left bearing went bad, it basically grenaded itself and then welded itself to the hub assembly I had to replace the entire hub assembly. My front left brake piston is sticking, if I take a hard right turn it will stick and generate a high pitched squeal until it either lets go or I cant hear it underway.

The bearing was a ongoing problem that I searched out and didn't realize it until it went.

The other thing I had the dealer diagnose, I still haven't fixed it. I need to just buy two new front calipers and put them on.

I drove around on the bad bearing for a couple of months.

I would think so,my bearings sounded like a jet taking off for a week before I changed them,just make sure there is not excessive play by jacking car frame until wheel is off the ground and holding tire at 12 and 6 o'clock,pull top then bottom to see if there is any play.

Could also be a rear bearing, sound travels through the frame and is hard to localize. At least it was in my case.

Confirmed front drivers side bearing, service being done Monday. Hope it's OK for a few hundred miles in the meanwhile?

Just got my 03 v6 and heard the same humming. Goes away when turning left, comes back and gets worse with right turns. Jacked up both front wheels and found quite a bit of play in the passenger side, and no play whatsoever in the drivers side. Pretty sure its the wheel bearing.

I know the hub assembly is fairly easy to replace, my question is, who has done this, and what brand wheel assembly did you use? The most expensive I've found is 279 from bluepitbearings.com but I'm pretty sure is OEM. Are there any other less expensive options that are reliable?

If you hear it when coasting and not so much when throttle is applied it could be a Pinion bearing as well.

Edit- I see it’s been diagnosed.
