Drove the 4R through Water that came over the hood & hood scoop.

TX has been blessed with 75-80 degree weather for the last couple weeks and now we are paying it back with MONSOON rains.

I was driving through about 2 feet of water when I hit a dip in the road just as someone was coming in the opposite direction in an F250. :dammit: The couple waves that hit my 4R pushed water over the hood of my 4R. One of them the waves completely covered the hood scoop!

I drove for 35 miles after that no problem. I got gas no problem, started up just fine. Want to know if there is anything I need to do to make sure it keeps running fine?

I want to see if any of you have ever done this?

Maybe some dry gas or fuel system cleaner to make sure no water deposits are in the fuel line, clean and vacuum air filter. I have smashed a couple large puddles if you will, if it's wuick I have found the air box typically keeps water out unless fully submerged for a good period of time. I have actually had more problems with the alternator getting wet and cutting electrical power rather than engine issues with water in the throttle body. Seems like you are safe, obviously I wouldn't make this a habit. :surfer:

Have you checked your air filter to see if it's wet? If the vehicle is running normally with no CEL's then I bet you're OK.

You should probably change your differential fluids though.

You should be OK if nothing has happened yet.

The air intake is above the fender linder in the top of the fender. The hood scoop is NOT functional and will have no affect on the vehicle. Newer Toyotas have water-resistant connectors on most all connections so I wouldn't worry about that.

I would really change out the air filter though. It's probably dried out if there was any water in the air system by now, but I'd get a new filter.

As suggested above check your air filter to see if it got contaminated or not.

Most likely you are fine.

Did the cabin stay dry, as a big concern is the electronics inside the cabin?

I would also recommend that you check your engine, diffs, transfer case and transmission fluids to see if there are any signs of water contamination. It will normally produce some cloudy color in the oil/fluid. Most likely in a short exposure it will be fine.

So were you Submerged up past your hood scoop?? (doesnt sound like it)

Or did you just have a bunch of water that came up over when the ford created the wake?


I take my car swimming all the time through some big mud puddles, (and thats dirty water, not rain water) and never have any problems. I think you will be completley fine, especially after 35mi of no problems.


Heres my friends jeep, we had equal amount of lift at the time 4" suspension and 33's (Now mines higher) 6" w/ 35's.. We hit this puddle alot harder then in the video, and even deeper ones and never had any problems, and this is pretty much submersion with some of the stuff we do

In case it hasnt been mentioned before in this thread, the hood scoop is NOT water-proof. There is no gasket around it, and if you look on the under-side of the hood, you'll see water dripping from the screws n hex nuts.

I drove through 3+ ft of water uh my runner today with the stock intake but 3 inch lift and no problems at all I went to rescue my wife who had to park in a shopping center cause there was no exit after the rain hit, it was horrible but amazing how I passed through everything when even tow trucks wouldn't go there. I was fun

I suppose the only thing you watch for in the next few months is the idler arm pulley, they are notorious for the bearings to go out (since they're not sealed) on the 4.0 liter setups. Tons of FJ's and Tacoma's have had the problem after swamping in mud/water. Not something you will see immediately, but be on the look out.

Are you actually comparing a car wash to being completely submerged in water?

Change all the fluids in your diffs, check the air box, let it dry out.

Why were you driving in water this deep? Why not relinquish your 1st gen for swimming?

Lexmedic hit the big one, the pulley bearings. Keep an ear out for them going south. The diffs should be ok provided the vent was working properly, might be worth it to jack up the front and see if you can drain a little rear diff fluid out to check for milkshake. Or, if you plan on driving through water regularly search for 'diff breather mod'.

Not comparing a car wash to being submerged in water, just saying, that if our trucks had problems after driving through some water, 2 feet deep, or being splashed on the road, I don't think I'd rely on it so fully.

Both me and OW mentioned it. I would take a serious look at your fluids to make sure water didn't get in either diff.
