drum brakes? Im bummed

Ive been researching the 4R for about a month now. Waiting on my new job before purchasing one, and now I find out that all 3rd gen 4R have drum brakes? Is this not the new millenium?

Drum brakes suck to work on & adjust, and basically for such an expesive SUV shouldnt have even been considered.
Im dissapointed Toyota even did such a thing.

Man the Grand Cherokee has had discs on the rear since 1995? Toyota should step up to the plate..

Do the 4th gen 4R have drum brakes (rear) as well?

Nope, fourth gens have disks all around. There are some people out there that think drums are good for off roading so that mud cant get lodged into the brakes at all. That may have been some of their thinking. Plus a lot of vehicles from pre-2000 had rear drums. My 2000 Silverado 1500 was the first pickup in that class to switch to rear disks.

nothing wrong with drums in the rear... the are actually very easy to adjust on a 3rd gen.... just a couple of tugs on the cable that runs along the back of the rear axle and your good!

Remember Doug that the 3rd gen came out way back in 1996 in the old millennium when 4 wheel discs wasn't necessarily the norm. Why they didn't go to 4 wheel disks with the mid-gen upgrade in '99 is a good question though. Even my 1970 Cougar has power front disks and rear drums (4 drums was std, front disks were an option). But like mike pointed out I don't think it's that big of a deal to have drums on the rear.

please explain to me how millions of owners with no complaints can be wrong.

i just recently replaced my rear drums at 132k, and there was still about 1/2 life life in the shoes. not a single issue with adjustment, as a simple jerk of the e-brake with some reverse speed takes care of that. and in all honesty, drum brakes are cheaper to repair/replace (based on the average cost of $120/caliper, plus pads on top) and work more than fine in 99% of situations.

if you can give me valid reasons as to why this setup is inferior/inadequet for the 3rd gen 4runner, then please do. i am almost begging to be proven wrong on this setup. it works, is proven, and is more than reliable. why change any of that?

Are you kidding me, what about the chrome bumpers. When was the last time you saw a car with chrome bumpers? I think the last car I had with chrome bumpers was my 1968 VW bug. The third generation does seem to have a interesting mix, ABS brakes, brake assist and drum brakes. Go figure.

I hear of people converting over to disc brakes for about $600.00. The rear brakes only do about 20%-30% of the braking. But most people loose the parking brake during the conversion. Also don't disc brakes take a higher brake fluid pressure than drums? I never hear of anyone remedying that.

your fronts are disk and one fluid goes in for both!

i dont think its worth it to do the conversion to all disk on the 4runners. .02

Well what I mean is that the current setup had a lower pressure going to the rear since they are drums. But when people convert over to disc, i don't hear of any mods to get a higher pressure to the rear. So they probably aren't getting the full amount of braking pressure after the mod they should be.

True drums are a PITA to replace, but they only need replacing like once every 120,000 miles! The rears hardly contribute to the stopping the vehicle, so I really do not think upgrading them to discs would actually improve things enough since it aint cheap

Go say that in Yotatech and they will create a huge stink lol. There are die hards overthere that think it is a great idea to pay $600 for rear disc and not have a parking brake anymore.

Perhaps discs would be nice all around, but if that is going to be the issue that stops you from buying a 4Runner then I would say the Jeep is not a bad idea. And I don't say that to be a jerk, just saying get what you think you really want or need. I have had 2 3rd gens and I find the brakes to be more than adequate, never had a problem at all. And like others have said drums last a long time without any work needed.

dude, quit with the crying. i think you should hang out on pirate, youll live in your room afraid to come out if you think YT is bad. seriously, its how you say it. they may love the idea, throwing your .02 will not create havoc unless you bash the idea all together in a rude way. a simple, my.02..., or, not for me because....is all you need to say. :cannon:

I removed the drums on my Jeep this morning to inspect the shoes. Turning the star adjuster wheel just to get them off took a while (you always turn it the wrong way which manually applies the brakes)

Anyway, opinions will never offend anybody on YT...being stupid will. Plus, many more people on there tow and carry loads around so rear discs actually come in handy for them, plus...there is MANY ways to get parking brake capability with rear discs, you just gonna know what you're doing.

Yeah there are work arounds. But the most popular option seems to be to just loose them and use the Monte Carlo calipers. But wouldn't you really need a parking brake if you are going to be parking with a trailer?

The most important part of your statement was CAR!! and thats exactly what the 4runner is not... remember its truck based, and since reading your statement ive been looking around and most trucks and real suvs have chrome bumpers....
