drum to disc brake conversion

Not sure if I trust that EBC guy. I never had warping issues on the stock brakes since new, and I'm not easy on them.

I'm working the rear disc as well but I had to stop due to life in general. I'm using mustang brakes and the cable ebrake system from those. I have the brackets drawn out and I have all the parts I need but I just haven't had time to prototype the bracket and then have them made from 3/8".

Plus it would be smarter to go to a full float before doing disc. The disc could start axles leaks prematurely. I'm not sold on this being the case though.

I blew through my front rotors like crazy untilI finally wised up and did the Tundra upgrade.

Tire size? Speed? How good of condition are your rear brakes in? I plan on doing that upgrade, but in 20 years of ownership I can't say that I have needed it. This is with some towing here and there. I'm not exactly easy on the skinny pedal either.

Everything was stock...I would have to go in what seemed like every year and a half for a break job and every other time at least needed new rotors...they would bring out the old ones just to thin to turn them. Ever since I have done the Tundra mod...same rotors same brake pads for the last 3 yrs. I would always have the rear brakes serviced with the front.

T4r2014 I can say I've had 2 runners one bone stock and now my decently modded one.... the bone stock went through multiple sets of front rotors... and on trail the braking power felt like complete Sh*t.. ... I'm guessing if you haven't noticed problems then you aren't dealing with much incline oriented driving. I went to the 13WL's on my current rig and would never go back!

My question: as I have read about all the rear disc conversion threads out there... has anyone successfully made brackets and transferred FJC rears to the 3rd gen runner?

It's not in everyone's budget but going FF with disc brakes is obviously a better solution.

With that said, keep in mind that a FF conversion on these housings can be problematic. Tolerances on a semi float design are a lot more forgiving than tolerances on a FF design. The kit (here) allows for very little play. So if your housing is even slightly tweaked or you don't have something placed/pressed correctly you will know immediately. Dirtco and URBAN ASSAULT can give first hand experience to this.

Since I've been offroading this vehicle since I got it in 2009, I opted to stay away from the kit for the fact that I just don't trust my rear housing enough. Instead, I went with a full float diamond axle in the rear. This assures me that everything will work perfectly and I wont have to take the chance of a tweaked stock housing throwing everything off or ruining parts with catastrophic failure. Again, not in everyone's budget, but at the same time, for me, it's not simply a band-aid on a bullet wound.

That's a great way to go! Anxious to see those upgrades!

I will also be doing a Diamond housing....someday. I will do that when I do a true 4 link in the rear and swap fuel tank with a cell. But I don't want to do that until I do dual cases so I know how long my custom driveshafts have to be, and my new links, and crossmember, etc.
Ouch! I just spent $5k in 1 paragraph. :decision:
Someday.....:sobbing:

I'm about to do this conversion.

The route I chose was Toyota OEM with a Landcruiser Prado rear axle.

It's a straight swap for our 3rd gens, and uses factory parts, with proper dust shields.

Infact I just got a message from my Toyota dealer that all my parts are in!

I have a wedding this weekend but I'll start building it all up next weekend, and of course document it here.

Should compliment my Tundra Fronts nicely.

I bought a 4th gen axle on the cheap that I'm planning to swap. It's a tad wider, which is a plus because now I can ditch my wheel spacers. Drum e-brake with disc main rotors. I plan to move all the brackets to work with the stock link locations. My existing diff will swap over too.

I still need to research a bit, but I may need a residual valve still. I'm trying to compare our stock master cylinders to those with rear discs. I'm going to rip out the ABS system too and T the lines where the ABS module is. 2nd battery will be taking its place.
