Dual Case Questions

But not front dig :(

Since you don't get front dig with twin sticks, I don't really see the point.

When I had dual cases (soon to have them again) I used low range 2wd a lot. Tight corners when wheeling, backing trailers around. On easier trails I would spend most of my time in low range 2wd.

Even better was when I had twin sticks coupled with a rear disconnect. Then I had low range front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or 4 wheel drive to use depending on the situation.

I said I didn't see it as useful....but then I don't wait to shift into 4wd (or turn on a selectable locker) until I can't go any further in 2wd either. To each his own.

Who made your rear disconnect or where did you source the parts?

It was on my 71 Blazer many moons ago (wow, like 20 years ago after doing the math) - I got it from Off Road Design but it doesn't look like they sell it any more. This was before my switch to Toyotas.

It was similar in design to the Trail Tough unit.Rear Drive Disconnect, For Toyotas

Sounds like it only works for 21 spline 4cyl. cases though.

Wonder what ever happened to the internal tcase disco that Marlin was working on?

Isn't there an atlas case for the 3rd gen that has the rear disconnect? I thought I saw one on low range's site when i was poking around

I have an Atlas...frankly, I'm not impressed. Also, you're not going to get dual cases with 3 speeds with an Atlas...just a lower geared single tcase....which is usable but not as versatile as having 2 cases and 3 speeds.

It would run about $3200 or so from Lowrange....

Clocking question

Does clocking affect the shifter position?

OK, another question on clocking: would this be the most appropriate way to clock the dual cases on a 3rd gen (V6/5spd), or would one simply redrill the adapter plate offered by a different manufacturer?

or alternatively - is it possible to just clock the rear case?

That's pretty slick and the only one I've ever seen that is clockable, I guess you could redrill another adapter plate but that is where it would need to happen. As far as I know there is no way to clock just the rear.

OK, saw this last night also - I'm assuming it could be used to clock the rear while maintaining the front case alignment (for shifter position)?

Transfer Case Crossmember question

This is a followup from my question on EatonKyleH's Build Thread:

If the FROR TCase crossmember eliminates the need for the transmission mount, in a situation where one is running dual cases with lots of reduction, would it not be advisable to add in a similar mount at the transmission also?

Seems like a lot of torsional force right in the center of the frame to me?

Thoughts?

I'm thinking about the possibility of clocking the rear case, going with a minimal body lift and using something like the FROR Crossmember to flatten the belly to the point where I can remove the factory crossmembers; so I'm understandably concerned about torsional forces..

Marlin has 10º clocking available on the adapter plate for the rear gear driven case. It's actually cheaper than the standard one. That's what I ended up going with for the 4Runner.

I'd do both....but then I'd also make a skid that runs under the tranny all the way to underneath the oil pan.

Since I'm chain driven in the rear, I'm limited to the Inchworm part, I suppose.
Although - I'm after 14 degrees, and it clocks in 5 degree increments (so I'll massage something) - ideal.

Pretty sure I'm going 4.7 in the front (if I can afford it)

1. 2.56
2. 4.7
3. Combined (what's that, 12 something?)

On the other hand; I don't plan on 35s, so I might be able to live with 2 ratios. ;)

if that's what you end up doing, make sure you upgrade the rear case to the 23 spline chromo shaft. to alleviate the chance of breaking it...

Just ditch your stock case and do a NW Fab Blackbox to Ford NP205 and then don't worry about it. I'm in it right around $3k with adapter and shifters.

That's what I'm thinking also - but at frame rail height...

(need to figure out the tank, though.)

Frame rail height is possible....but you *may* have to cut into the trans tunnel to get a truly flat belly....unless you run something like FROR's plate style Xmember and make some other type of skid. Otherwise, you're looking at something like a 2" drop below the frame rail if you want a crossmember UNDER your tcases.....by that I mean your cases will likely be flush with the rail, but the Xmember will be an additional 1.5-2" thick....if that makes sense.
