Dual Outlet Ashtray ?

Thanks for the ebay link. I have been waiting because I didn't really want to pay the dealer 60 dollars for one. Installed it last night in about 3 minutes. The hardest part was getting the hard crusty tape loose so I could extend the second plug.

If you're not a smoker u can permanently replace the lighter with USB charger makes it convenient and looks clean IMO

Smokers kit for extra 12v outlet

I like that set-up, it just looks so much cleaner.

altho, I would miss that little pocket. I put my phone in there.

I think it might still JUST fit in the smoker kit with the tray removed.

I like that.
do they make the same usb socket in a dual configuration?

Even if they do make that same one, I'm under the impression that for the smokers kit, one outlet is 12v while the smoker one is 1v, so even if you had a dual usb port in the 1v outlet, it wouldnt even charge correctly since it's not drawing enough power?

Yes they do
nice.

well that's just dumb.

I don't think that can be right tho. what will 1v do? nothing. it certainly wouldn't get a lighter hot enough to do anything.

im not exactly sure if its 1v or more/less. i think i read it somewhere on this forum, let me try looking for the thread...

I do know the 09 version with the rear window button on it (pictured previously in this thread) has dual 12v outlets, but that accessory is in the 300 range while you can get the smokers kit for around 40-60 bucks.

I would question getting the stock Toyota one. That port was meant for a cell phone or ipod. If Ur charging any iPad or an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 the 1 amp stock Toyota unit won't actually charge a working powered on device anymore than a laptop USB will, it will power Ur device but not add much or anything to the battery. Ive done road trips w iPhone 5 nav/GPS running on a 1 amp charger and still lost battery. For either phone and or iPad u need a 2.1 amp USB. I travel for a living and use an inverter/battery pack and 2 USB 2.1 amp chargers (iPad chargers) to charge my iPad 3 and iPhone 5. It's not as sexy but I can charge both devices and my MacBook Pro off a $109 black and decker inverter/portable charger that also has a compressor to fill tires and can jump start my 4runner and charge my devices for 10hrs without running the the truck. USB 2.0 cable extensions are less than $10 on amazon.

What's funny is that the cig lighter is on a different circuit from the 12v power outlets. I found this out when I did the 12v constant-on mod. After it was all done, the 12v power outlets front and rear stayed on all the time, but the lighter outlet (which I use as a general power outlet since I don't smoke) still switches off with the ignition. Strange, huh?

My 4runner has the smoker's kit but without the ashtray. Fortunately, my cell phone fits perfectly into the ashtray slot so that's where I keep it.

I read it on this thread:
http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/129128-best-way-add-usb-port-12v-outlet.html

care to chime in? I don't understand electrical stuff very much or how the watts/amps/volts stuff works together and how it'll affect (if at all) how much charge you'll get off the cig lighter.

if the cig lighter doesn't power 12volts, is there a way to wire it up so it does?

They're both 12v. There is no 1v power on your car. 1 watt, yes. 1 amp, yes. 1 volt, no. Most cars are 12v except in the case where there is a power inverter somewhere that takes the 12v to 120v or something else for running a TV or something (some cars do have this).

Some older cars may have 6v systems, but the same thing applies -- 1 watt, 1 amp, but 6 volt...

The USB plug itself *might* have a stepdown transformer or something -- sometimes they charge at 9v or 5.6v for a phone or whatever, but the thing that you plug it into in your car will be 12v. What you'd what to know is what amperage does the device generate -- that's how much juice your phone is getting so it can charge.

Ex: My household 120v usb plug-in for my phone outputs 2.0 amps at 5.0 volts. That's pretty good. My car 12v usb plug-in for my phone outputs 0.950 amps at 5.0 volts. Not as good as when I'm home but hey it works fine.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled thread...

I installed mine today and it is AWESOME to have two power sources!

It was a FACTORY SEALED toyota part. Nice surprise there. Supplier shipped quickly. Fit is perfect. Matches the interior exactly. Easy to put in. Looks good. Works good. And for $40-ish bux? No brainer.

If you have a garage door opener with a clip or something on the back, you can put it on the the visor. I put mine near the the hinge that can disconnect, in the little recessed area for the hinge to clear. It doesn't really affect the visor, and if yours does, you can just disconnect that hinge and flip it up in front of the hinge.

Every thread I see shows how to remove the consol , which is very easy.
Then they say just pop out the lighter ashtray assembly. Mines not just
Pushing out of the consol. Any tips , thanks

It was very easy

Once I got the part.
Pull 3 wires. 2 off the ashtray component and 1 off the DAC button which is connected to the console. Then you can pull the whole console out. The ashtray kit is held on with 1 tab and 2 plastic clips that are built in. 5 minutes for me who is on the low end of mechanically inclined. $$23.96 for the new part on EBay. I’ll post pics if I can figure out how, noob here

About a month ago I added this so I could have two power sources and charge my cellphone while keeping one free. Then I figured out how to install a dual USB charger next to the descent control button on the console. It took me literally 10 mins to install it. So I switched back to the original configuration and removed the ashtray. Now I have an extra $30 part that I don't need and is practically new. :)
