Dual Transfer Cases

304-Runner

New member
Hi, so I want to install a dual transfer case but need some advice on how to do it.

I currently have a 4runner with a 304 v8 in in it and have decided to run the T700 auto, I'm up to the stage where I call up Marks Adaptors and purchase the adaptor housing for the Transfer Case. (depending on which T/C I use)

The problem I have is, which transfer case goes where and which one's should I use because I have two different patterns which will alter my purchase from Marks Adaptors.

I have 3 transfer cases to chose from.

I have a T/C from a IFS G52, one from an R151 (2004 lux button activated 4wd) and a top shifting T/C from a pre 83 Lux.

I'm aware that there a kits from Marlin and T-G but they seem to be kits for adding a 2nd TC that is forward shifting.

Can anyone recommend a suitable combination? Or offer some advice based on experience?

I dunno about the r151 or g52 transfer cases. Most guys here in the States use the gear-drive transfer case from behind a W56 manual trans.

The Marlin and Trail-Gear dual case adapters require that one of the cases be a top shift. The other can be forward or top shift, I believe.

Ok thanks, do you happen to know which end the top shift T/C is located?

I'd assume the back so the forward shifting collars on the standard T/C can still work with the trans?

I haven't gone to duals yet, I've just got the 4.7 case for now so I don't know for sure. I think you're correct, that the rear case must be top shift and the middle case can be either.

This is correct. The rear t-case MUST always be top shift and the crawl bow can be either/or. I recommend the marlin adapter! Very good quality.

Ok great. Do you guys have the vacuum (or electrically) activated transfer cases?
I have one here but not sure how to wire it up as its from a newer 2004 v6 and my truck is a 1986 model.

I'm not sure that case will work? The Marlin and Trailgear adapters are designed specifically for the case behind the W56 transmission, it's gear driven and mechanically actuated. To the best of my knowledge, the W56 didn't make it past 1995 (here in the States, anyway), so I dunno that a transfer case from a later transmission will work with that particular adapter?

I'm thinking your best bet is going to be to call or email Marlin and get it from the horses mouth. If the transfer case you have WILL work, let us know what truck it came from so we have more options! :)

Yeah its difficult to narrow down the box used in the Australian 4runners. We had over 25 different transfer case and transmission combinations from the late 70s' to current.

I'll try and track down some part numbers off my cases and see if Marlin have heard of the model I have.

Yes.
The forward case is whatever mates to your trans, whether top or forward shift (ie, your stock case).
The second case is a top shift.
And we are talking gear driven 4 cyl style cases for the second case, not chain driven V6 or other cases.

Shoot Marlin a email or give them a call if you can. They have pretty much done it all.

Im in Australia, so I'll have to send them an email otherwise I'll have to wake up at about 2am to make the call :)

I think we have a carrier of the Marlin gear here anyway. I'll google and see what local stores come up with Marlin info....

Im not exactly sure where the 2nd cases gear stick is going to pop through, as its being mated to an Auto (T700) because it already has a V8 in it and I keep blowing the Toyota boxes (the ones I have anyway).

The T700 is rather large in length, plus the adaptor plate for the GM box to Toyota transfer, then the Marlin adaptor then the top shitf case... YIKES!

Perhaps my rear passengers can change gears for me ;)

Either way I'll post some pics up of it being done when I get round to it.
