I love the detail in this build thread! Have you had a chance to test it on a trail yet? I need to hear how that new gear ratio is treating you!

Thanks! I try to be detailed, I wonder if anyone actually reads it. Just trying to help others not have the problems that I have run into.

The 5.29s are awesome around town. Even with the 33's. I dont have a problem with them up to 70-75.

70mph is about 3400RPMs 75 is about 3600, so anything in that range for too long Im sure will go thru gas... I havent had a full tank of highway driving yet since i put them in. I am wondering a bit about heading to Moab and some of the 75MPH section that everyone does 80+ on.

Once I try them and the TruTrac out with some rock crawling Ill let you know. Im anticipating the crawl ratio should be pretty good based on the numbers Ive seen.

I know people say that its not that big of a difference, they are wrong. going from 4.10 to 4.88 may not be, but going from 4.10 to 5.29 is very noticeable.

But again, Since this is not my DD, No probs.

For what its worth, Ill remind you, I chose to have Chase modify the TruTrac rather than throw in the flag.

I still believe in the Trutrac for its ability. Both LINY4runner and Fonerunner have had no problems with it and love the added capability.

Remember, its also Zero maintenance, and clutchless, unlike other lockers.

When I finally figured out what the problem was, Chase at ECGS and I went over options and the little $$ I had to spend to send it to him to add that bearing was nothing compared to upgrading to an ARB.

Furthermore, I like the idea of an ARB in the back with the Straight axle, but not so much in the front of an IFS. I think the Trutrac combined with my manual transmission is a better choice than an ARB and an auto up front. Knock on wood, but Steeze, Gerdo and I all have manuals and have yet to blow a cv...

Snowrunner(open diff) and Yoshida(F+R ARB) (both of them autos) together have probably blown more than 20 in the last year.

I chose to spend the extra $$ to gain the Trutracs capability, over keeping an open diff.

Front install kit.
245.00

Eaton TruTrac was 490.00

Nitro 5.29 gears for the front and rear diff and a rear install kit.
665.00

So total I spent $1400 on parts to regear and add the TruTrac

I spent 330$ on labor for setting the gears and having Chase at ECGS modify the TruTrac.

so all in all about 1800$ total after misc supplies/beer/food for helpers etc.

I could have done it a bit cheaper by just ordering the whole Front diff with Trutrac from ECGS and then ordering the parts and doing the back the same as I did.

but that probably would have only saved maybe 100-200$

From left to right you may recognize: SteezeMcqueen, 00Spork, Sn0wrunner, Me, Shawn St. Cyr. and then our RM4x4 friend aka Monstero.


The damage was Sn0wrunners rig.. his LBJ bolts either fell out, or sheared off... either way, his ball joint was intact, but the bolts came out. This was luckily at low speed and within sight of the trailhead as we were leaving.

its all ok though, no one got hurt and he was able to drive it home after borrowing an LBJ bolt from Steeze...

Here is me in Jenny Creek, I slipped off that rock and ended up using my Lil Skips belly pan!

Drew aka 00Spork came and jumped on my rock sliders on the driver side and I was able to get off the rock.

after I pulled out a huge Bronco that had been stuck there for over a day, we proceeded thru the spot he got stuck with little to no issues.

I must say that 5.29 gearing is great. I actually caused myself issues, I put the 4runner in 4Hi at the beginning of the trail. I ended up pulling that Bronco out with very little trouble in 4hi. At the toughest section in Jenny creek, I crawled up one bit in 4hi no problem. Then I started smoking my clutch trying to keep my RPMs higher. Then, I realized how dumb I had been. I put it in 4Lo and crawled right up the rocks. I can also go to almost not even moving with the clutch out and the engine stays alive with these gears. I know its not as good as dual Tcases, but its pretty nice to be able to go 1mph and lower and not have your manual die on you.

I can definitely feel the difference with the TruTrac also. It was 100% worth all the pain and trouble. I could feel it gripping in 4wd... I could feel the road and steering better in 4hi and lo with it on.

Great first trip, cant wait to actually use the Trutrac and the gearing in 4lo. hopefully we will be going this weekend. More reports after that.

Correct. He sold it. He now has an '81 Toyota pick up. Its the 2nd from the left in the picture between mine and steeze's.

Its actually not bad. I dont know that I would drive out to Cali on 33's, I would probably have to put some 35's on first... but for driving around Colorado its great. at 70mph im sitting about 3400rpms... at 75mph 3600 and 80 is about 3900RPM... not great for long distances but just fine for getting to trails in CO and UT..

Its not a big deal cuz I have a 2001 Grand Am GT that I drive daily now.

Correct. He sold it. He now has an '81 Toyota pick up. Its the 2nd from the left in the picture between mine and steeze's.

And that 81 is a beast. Once he works out the issues with it being carbureted by adding propane or going FI it will be even more unstoppable.
We are just glad to have him back wheeling with us. His Green 4runner was awesome.

It is a sweet lineup, and we didnt even have some of our other regulars... Gerdo, Glen Yoshida, 5runner (formerly known on T4R as CSL)

Yeah, It was so nice to actually have some fun in this thing without having to work on it. I think this weekend is a camping/wheeling trip so Ill see if I can get more pics, maybe some of the new rear control arms and other stuff I put on while the rig was down.

Its not that bad considering the 4runner redlines near 6k. Im not sure if the fact that I have a manual changes the ratio at all. I never played with the transmission/transfer case settings on the site I used to figure what gears I wanted.

good question... Im not in any rush, I just bought new 4 new Toyo Open Country MT's at $290 a pop this last summer. considering I was down for 6 months, and the 4runner hasn't been my daily driver since August, they have pretty much 95% tread on them. Ill almost definitely wait til these tires are gone to move to 35's.

that brings up another question though. What are the next mods? and what priority.

1.Extended brake lines and SS lines in general are priority #1. My brake lines are not looking too great.

once the brake lines are done, I have longer shocks ready to go.

2. longer shocks. my procomps are only good for 2.5" lift, they have needed to be replaced for a long time

3. Mount for my Toshiba Thrive so I can use all the features of the Terrain mapping and Torque Pro apps. will accomodate pics and video also.

4. Possible new sleeping platform/storage box

5. TRD supercharger

6. Rear ARB locker

7. hmmm... TBD

I would say that we are in the 75% range that we will move out that way in the next 2-3 years.

Good point about going up to 35's. Right now I'm happy with 33's but there is always room to grow. I need to focus on a few other things like a locker first and foremost then some skids.

So this weekend I went with Gerdo and Glen Yoshida to Halfmoon Creek to wheel and camp, then we went to Wheeler lake...

Got to test out the gearing and TruTrac again.

The gearing once again proved to be an asset on the trail, but not on my gastank... it wasnt too painful, I just had to fill up one extra time than everyone else.
