Dumb Question about Cargo Net

So I ordered an envelope cargo net from the Toyota parts T4R forum site sponsor to fit the 2015 4Runner. I have the envelope cargo net in my '06 4Runner, and in addition to the stretch cords on the top of the net, it has a stretch cord woven through the bottom of the net that attaches to the clips in each bottom corner. The stretch cords at the top of the net along with the stretch cord at the bottom makes the entire net taut across the cargo floor, which allows it to actually hold stuff from falling out of the cargo area.

The new net that I received today does not have a stretch cord in the bottom of the net. When the net is in place and anchored at each of the four corners, the entire bottom of the net just hangs slack above the floor. Without the bottom being taut across the load floor, anything on the floor would just roll under/past the net like it's not even there.

Does anyone know if the new net is supposed to have a bottom stretch cord like my older net and is defective, or does the new net just hang there for storage? If it's defective, I would like to send it back. If the new net is designed purposely without a bottom stretch cord, it is a piss-poor design, and I might send it back anyway.

This is a long post over something as simple as a net, but I'll be pretty disappointed if Toyota actually designed the new net to be almost useless.

Thanks. I'll probably buy a length of stretch cord and weave it through the bottom of the net and try and attach it to the bottom anchor clips. My old net has the bottom stretch cord sewn or glued into heavy-duty nylon webbing type material at the corners, and so the hardest part will be figuring out how to attach it.

I know this is a trivial issue, but I can't believe Toyota would screw up such a simple, effective design, probably to save 10 cents on a piece of cord.

When my wife says something like "who is the dumbazz that designed this stupid piece of crap", you know something is wrong. What a joke....

I've always though of those nets as a way to put stuff inside so it wouldn't slide around and less as a barrier or fence. Having said that, a bungee cord in about 36 - 40" length woven through the bottom should work. Or you could try to just get a couple of those small carabiners like people use on their key rings and see if attaching them to the tie downs at each corner would work.

Why not just put the item(s) inside the net pocket? That's what it's for. It isn't designed to be a barrier.

Well, this isn't the first OEM cargo net I've had in vehicles. Each of the other nets, including the Toyota net in my '06 4Runner, were designed to stretch taut across the back and act at least partially as a barrier. With the addition of 10 cents worth of cord, this new net would, too. They do an excellent job keeping soccer balls, basketballs, water bottles, grocery bags, etc. from falling out of the cargo area when the liftgate is opened.

Putting stuff inside the pocket mostly sucks. If it's anything bulkier than something like an umbrella or pair of gloves, it bulges the net and gets in the way when closing the liftgate. In my mind, the net works better as a barrier than it does for storage. YMMV.

I know you are referring to the 5th gen but I never liked how the clips at the bottom didnt really stretch to the proper full width on the 4th in order to act as a good barrier that you describe. Simple addition of a screw eye and cable tie fixed the issue.

I went thru the same issue, had a 2004 runner the net was great. Now have a 2014 runner and bought a 2014 net and you are right it is crap. So I bit the bullet and bought a new net for a 2004 and it works great in my 2014, and it was about 10 bucks less than the 2014 version, online it cost about 16 bucks.

So I waited until I needed some other maintanance items and that made the price attractive.My dealer even with a small discount was about $30.00 plus tax.

Agreed! A couple months ago I order the net for the 2015 and the quality / usefulness of it was total garbage. Sent it back the same day.

Thanks to this thread my net for the prior generation 4Runner arrived today. Much better!

Cargo net continuation

Hi,
Just landed my first 4runner - 2013 Limited. Love it. Two cargo questions:
1. Is the cargo net on OEM WORLD suggested for my 2013 (CARGO NET - ENVELOPE - TOYOTA (PT347-89100)) going to give me the issues others have posted, and should I get the other (older model) mentioned net in the post?
2. Secondly, the top left rear hook on the inside side panel is missing - theres a square hole where it used to be. Before I pop the panels out to see if its dropped down in between the body and shell, does anyone know if therese things snapback into the spot, or is it likely ot got yanked out and is not fixable?

Dont want to journey into the realm of high risk high reward cargo nests if I cant get that hook replenished.
