Dumb question dreamer upgrading 4Runner ; Shocks on a premie?

So, I've posted a few here but I am more of a techie than anything. Also, my spine is kinda shot at 48.

Still, I have my 2017 4Runner Off Road Prem. Love it but have not used it to the max and yet I still upgrade it in little steps/mods.

Question, so obviously I will get heck for wanting to upgrade a 4Runner Off Road Premium KDSS from the stock shocks I barely broken in.

I have a shot spine so I've barely put miles on it but I can dream I will get better and miss the outdoors.

So when that dream day happens, I want to max out as I can afford the specs on some of my 4Runner (THAT I DO LOVE).

So I have the stock shocks with the Off Road Premium, shocks feel decent for the bit I got off road but would love to dampen things even more for the day I really can go for it.

What would be your suggestion for an upgrade on the shocks vs. stock. Oil reservoir dampened Bilstein or no point, better brand (fox, etc.), but yet still somewhat affordable? Not $2K please.

I can't do the job myself. I've done a few ez stuff like LED's behind grille, or lol- a pedal commander.

Suggestions? I just want to dream of the day my low mileage 4Runner (replaced my Bulllit and '88 F250 beast) that I can go and hit the passes in CO. I did this in trucks (F250/Ranger) but I just can't do much until they someday fix my spine and cervical cord right. Waste? Perhaps, not seeing a waste in CO having a sweat 4Runner here that will always have great resale anyways.

I wish I was a gear head- would be if I could but I can't do the time on my feet and such. Got a lot of tools but I have a better option- an ASE mechanic buddy and son that know what they are doing for cheap.

Sorry on rant. I do love the truck (I call it a truck). I love CO and miss the outdoors (due to my spine fail/surgeries) and can dream to have it back.

So shocks? Stocks are cool with the coils and all but I feel ripped that it did not come with Bilsteins std. on this build/upgrade that I have.

Hey OP

I'll skip the part asking you to search around here, as there's hundreds of posts on the suspension option available for the 5th gen. This is where you need to start.

Some general notes: aftermarket suspension will improve the vehicle control and handling in general, but will NOT be softer or more supple than stock shocks. It would be best if you test ride a modified truck to see if that's an issue for you or not.

That being said, I'm guessing a bilstein 5100 setup with your stock coils is a good start point. Any good monotube shock is a decent upgrade from the stock twin tubes. It may just come down to you finding the best deal when shopping around on any one of the brands mentioned around the forum.

I am not 100% clear here but I assume you are talking about smoothing things out while off road - if thats the case no change in shocks is going to compare to dropping your tire pressure to 15-18psi - Are you doing that? If not, stop, get your self an cheap air compressor and go give that a try.
