OMG, these Dunlops are terrible. I guess it's my fault, I'm expecting too much being I'm use to A/Ts but damn... Well, I was over-accelerating on purpose just to see how badly I could swing the back end and the the beeping begun s the traction and skid control took over. What a noise maker but it does work! :D I can't wait to see how much better it works w/ A/Ts on!!

Oh I got my Pioneer HU, V1 radar detector and Bel laser jammer installed. I'll have pics up soon. :D

Neech,

Darn, that's surprising! When looking at the Dunlops Grandtrek at the dealership, i did not think they look that bad. The tread design looks OK...i thought it was better than the Bridgestone Dueler H/T on some other models.

If you are going to change tires, my vote is for the BFG A/T ko, which is LT-rated, and Load Range D (8-plies!).

Those are the exact ones I was looking at!!

Good-bye tax refund! We a good part of it! :D

Neech:

you have the ltd 4runner which means 17" rims....

good luck finding any tires that will fit...

BFG at's has em for 265/70/17 and 285/70/17....

doubtful the 285's will fit w/o lifting (which are not out yet)

265/70/17s are the plan. Pretty expensive too. Townfair Tire wants $174 mounted and balanced each... Damn 17s!

Neech, yup, BFG AT KO is really expensive, probably the most expensive all-terrain tire. However, it is also considered the best all-terrain tire. So, you get what you paid for!

Thanks for the reassurment... We're expecting a storm this weekend so I might have to i this sooner than later.

I was making a left on a snowy road last week, post snowfall, and entered the corner to fast. Instead of down shifting and giving it it some gas to get the tires to track, I layed on the brakes. Well, first it understeered :( and I was bearing down on a fire hydrant. The fronts grabbed and the back end let go and begun to shoot for the hydrant. VSC kicked in and for the record, all that beeping is very distracting! At the last second, 4 inches from the hydrant, I got off the brake, gave it some gas and the VSC straighter me out. Pretty scary. This was on a snow packed, poorly plowed road. Dunlops feel like slicks on this surface. They just don't dig that much.

If I remember correctly, the tires are 265/65-17. Won't a 265/70-17 be a bit larger circumference? Or do I have that backwards?

Not that it matters to the tire/wheel, but just thinking about these small towns down here that nail you for 2mph over speed limit -- the larger circumference can make the speedo inaccurate enough to cost you here!

jharris:

comparing the two between 265/70 and 265/65..

265/70 will be larger than the 265/65

265/70/17:
Diameter: 31.6"
Section Width: 10.4"
Section Height: 7.3"

265/65/17:
Diameter: 30.6"
Section Width: 10.4"
Section Height: 6.8"

Now obviously the 265/70's will be abit larger than the 265/65's...
Now this means his speedo will change too since the diameter has changed:

going 60 mph (shown on speedo) he's actually going 62 mph...

The problem is not obeying the speed limits as much as it is the cops who nail you in the small towns for minor "letter-of-the-law" infractions. You know the places -- put up a tiny yellow sign with a 35 mph speed limit in a section where the speed limit outside of their city limits is 60 or higher.

It is so bad in some parts of Arkansas that the legislature passed a law a few years ago that bans cities from collecting moere than 30% of their budget from traffic fines. The attorney general has actually stopped one town from enforcing their speed limits under this law.

Of course, when I lived in Texas, there were some places where the fine was accompanied by a 3-day vacation in the city jail. Reservations not required.

Damn, reminds me when I was a kid watching the Dukes of Hazzard and Rossco would have the remote control speed limit sigh say one thing then hit the button and have it say something lower :p as someone passed! LOL
