Duratracs on ice and slush?

Hi All,

I recently put on a set of duratracs and noticed they have the snowflake symbol. I already have a set of Goodyear Ultragrip ice, which while good on icy slushy roads pack up with snow pretty easily. I'm thinking the duratracs will make a good all-round tire.

Are the duratracs good on those icy slushy days on pavement? I think they would be- and I am thinking I'll just sell the ultragrips and free up some space in the garage (and make less space in my wallet!). For those with experience with duratracs in the winter- how do they stack up against a dedicated "ice" tire? I don't want to sell the ultragrips and then find out they were a whole lot better than the duratracs next winter!

Subscribed, as I have a brand new set of Duratracs that I will mount closer to winter and would be curious on people's experiences.

The tread blocks are pretty aggressive, and there is moderate siping (although not as much as a true winter tire). I wonder how the tire performs once the tread has been worn down more and you are left with only the tread blocks but little siping.

Well I have had the Durtracs on for about 3 years now, and have full confidence in them in the winter weather. I don't have any experience with the tires you already have for so I cannot compare the two.

I'm not really sure what you mean by icy and slushy conditions, since no tire will get good traction on ice, unless studded (which the durtrac has holes ready for studs). Obviously with the large thread pattern they don't particularly pack with snow unless it's a pretty wet snow.

Overall I don't plan to change to a different tire when time comes, unless something new with better performance is released. There are some pretty lengthy threads on here about the durtracs I would suggest checking through them for further info.

I was only able to experience the tail end of winter on my Duratracs, but I am fully confident in their abilities in the winter. They are 100% better than the Hankook Dynapros I had!

I just went through a 3rd winter with mine and have not been disappointed one bit and even in 2wd they do a good job of keeping the rearend in line. The biggie part of the Duratrac's performance for me is the ability to avoid hydroplaning at higher speeds in which they trump the BFG A/Ts hands down.

They also seem to do very well in deep, late season snow.
With the locker, I was very surprised how far they

The snowflake symbol means they meet the required performance testing for snow. You will find that symbol on ALL snow tires. To put it simply, they're good in snow. Duratracs also have holes in the tread to put studs in them for ice driving.

Yeah, I realize that but I was just wondering if they would be as good on the ice and slush as the ultragrips. The ultragrips work well on "cleared" roads, but pack up easy off road in the snow to the point where I'm extra cautious when it's time to leave the road and get in to deep snow. I have no doubt the duratracs will be better in deep snow.

I got an unsolicited review from my neighbour coincidentally yesterday- he's had a set on for 4 years or so and said they are awesome in the winter. I bought the tires on his recommendation in the first place.

So- based on what folks are saying here it looks like I've got a set of tires for sale! Thanks for the input guys
