E locker Retro Questions

I found an E locker diff with 4.10 gears coming out of a 99 tacoma. Just want to verify that it will work with my 97 SR5. The code on my door shows I have 4.10 gears so I'm just making sure everything is legit.

Is there I should be looking for when checking out the diff to make sure it's in decent condition? The plan is to have it hold out until I regear for 35's.

Is $350 a decent price for this? Thanks for the help

That's a great price, and yes it will work. Just remember that you need to modify your axle housing or get a new e locker housing to make it work.

Get the seller to at least bench test it for you, and make a video of it.

if all this includes the wiring/actuator etc. then go for it. but definitely agree with stockwell45 on testing it. if the actuator's garbage it's really expensive to replace.

^^ agreed. Also, it's wise to do the "spin test" to make sure you have 4.10s since the gear code charts can be wrong.

Wait?

Why are you going to "Make it last until you regear?"

Honestly man, if you're going to regear, and put in a different set of lockers, ie ARB, LockRight, whatever you are feeling like, I would NOT do the e-locker.

You have to Modify the housing, so if you're going to regear anyway, why not save that 350 for that?

I'm not sure how putting a different locker into a E-locker housing would be, but I imagine it would kinda be a PITA.

I would just save the 350 and put it towards the gears that I plan on getting, along with some other stuff....

I'm planning on keeping the E locker but changing up to 4.88 or 5.29 gears.

How do I bench test the actuator? Sounds like a pretty simple setup if you can lock and unlock manually.

If I remember right, taco's have leaf springs and you will need to do some cutting and welding to make it work.

I think he's just planning on swapping the third member. It would seem like a massive waste of labor to cut and weld on the axle to make it retro-fit, when all you have to do is a little notching and changing out the studs to retro the E-locker in a non-E-locker housing.

Ya that plan is just to swap the third. It's easier to find a taco 3rd with 4.10 gears than to find a 4Runner with one.

Still no info on a quick bench test to check if the actuator works?

Found this on Yota-Tech....

" When I was testing the motor I hooked a 12V to the LG(1) and ground to LG-R(2) and the motor would rotate clockwise (locking). Switch the wires 12V-LGR GRND-LG and the motor would rotate counter-clockwise (unlocking). Hope that helps. "

That's what I needed. Thanks!

Well the guy ended up selling it right out from under me... Let me know if anyone has one laying around for 350 shipped haha. Thanks do the help

That sucks dude. Just be aware that 4.10 lockers are rare there were a bunch listed on car-parts.com as 4.10 and ended up being 4.30. I ended up buying 4.30 locker because when I was driving to pick up my "4.10" I got a call it was a 4.30. The guy still had the front diff so I got both.

Ya that's why I'm searching for tacoma 3rds because supposedly they have 4.10 more often than 4Runners do. Fingers crossed that it's true
