E-locker swap

I been wanting have a E-locker for a while and the search in the junk yard have not been successful. So I turn to another method TRANSPLANT. I set off to find another used 4Runner with a diff lock to become the donor for my 4Runner. At long last I found this 1996 4Runner Limited with a Savage title. The donor 4runner is in good mechanical shape. The only bad think would be the cosmetic condition of the exterior paint and a dent here and there.

Anyways after a short research looking through the service information from ALL DATA of the factory E-locker I draw up plans to install the E-locker so that it looks like it is straight from the factory.

I started with removing the rear axle which is pretty straight forward just unbolt everything that connects to the rear axle it falls off. lolz But do keep a jack under it when you are disconnecting everything. One important tip.. I found that using a tire valve cap I was able to plug up the brake line while I do my work preventing a major lost of brake fluid.

At this time since I have everything off the back of my 4runner I installed a slightly shorter 8.25 wraps LC springs just to try how it compares to the 9.25 wraps springs I have on it before and longer LC shocks. Also upgraded to a longer brake line from toytec.

The wiring was the worst possible. I have read online where others have written about the E-locker swap and they say how their 4runner was semi pre-wired for a E-locker. After removal of some panels I found out that my 4Runner HAS NON OF ANY WIRING THAT IS ANY PART OF THE E-LOCKER WIRING 0_0 well Sh*t…… at least I have a background in automotive wiring and mechanics and a donor car so no problem, I would just create my own wiring harness.

First I needed the rear axle harness from the donor car and boy that was not an easy task. I was about to drop the fuel tank because I could not get the rear axle harness clips off top of the fuel tank. Even tho I was perfectly capable of removing the fuel tank I was lazy. So I stuck a torch through the access panel on top of the fuel tank and melted the clips off.

With the wires off I striped all the wire protection to separate the E-locker wiring from the ABS wiring. Cut the E-locker wiring off the connector that goes in the interior and put everything back into the donor car.
Bolting everything back on to the 4runners was also pretty straight forward. Now came the test to see if the gear ratio was the same between my 4runners. I drove it to the street and put it into 4WD and &^$^%@%$@^%# dammm it.

Back to work in transplanting the front axle. Start with removing the front wheels, then the front axle 35mm bolt, then the lower ball join 4 bolts, then move the hub assembly out of the way, take a big A$$ pry bar and remove the CV axle. Now comes the pain in the A$$ part, the front diff does not have that much clearance. It takes a little bit of work before you will be able to free it, also don’t forget to remove the vacuum lines and connectors and the breather tube off the Front diff.

The install is also equally painful if not more since now you have gravity fighting you this time. And as all service manual say “install in reverse order of removal”

Here comes the wiring. It could be confusing at first not bad at all after I study it and compare it to the wires I have. Here is the wiring diagram I draw up on paint of my wiring plan below. The hard part is that I didn’t have the luxury of pre-wiring. I have to create most of my wiring even add a pin to my gauge wiring harness. But all in all it paid off and now I have a nice red light next to the green 4wd light ^_^

Also I have the bench test of the e-locker here 4Runner E-locker 3rd gen Retro fitting OEM look - YouTube

This will be me in about a week...Was the bulb behind the dash for the indicator already there?

yes all clusters are the same, you will just have to run a source/indicator wire to the cluster i believe to make the light work, you will also need to put a bulb in the socket

as i said all cluster are the same, when i took mine apart to chance all the bulbs to led, i notices that i had the diff lock and some other dash lights that did not pertain to my runner, as they had no bulbs in them, they were just empty sockets. -manual trans guys will have the indicator lights for the auto trans, but they will all be blank...

OP, do you want to part out the donor 4runner? im looking for some end caps for my rood rack rails, let me know 98662 is my zip

Yea the kid is right the printed circuit board on the back of the cluster has all the indicators possible for 4runner is just that the the ones that does not pertains to your 4runner just does not have a light bulb in it and your gauge harness does not have a pin for it.

nan not looking to part it out since it takes too much work and time and specially when it is still fully functional and is registered. Just planning to sell the whole truck. About the roof rack end caps I might have some spares I just have to look for it some where in my garage....I will let you know, but what is your offer on them?

Question, I just had a complete rear axle assembly delivered for my 1997 4runner and mine is as follows, 16 inch wheels, with abs with no e-locker 4.10 gear ratio. The one they delivered has the elocker on it which I noticed right away and is supposed to be a 4.10 and it also has abs. So can I use this one in my 4Runner without hooking up the e locker or not hooking up the elocker right now but doing that later? Will it still work and I assume it would have to be open and not locked in order to work so how would I test that to see? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

So you are trying to say your 4runner is a 4.1 gearing and you have a extra 4.1 rear end with a diff lock which you want to put on your truck right? And you want to know if you can put on the diff lock rear end without wiring up the e-locker?

Answer: yes, a e-locker rear end without any electric connection will just mean you cant change it between locked and unlock. Given that the e-locker rear end is in the unlocked position it will just function as a open diff.

anyway to check to see if its unlocked before i install it?

Simple...turn one of the wheel or in your case one of the drum ....while turning one of the drum look at the direction of rotation of other drum. If it is spinning the same direction it is locked if it is spinning the opposite direction then it is unlocked

Congrats man, I did the same rear transplant from a '97. I was just able to buy the axle though thank god. I didn't do the front so more power to you. I did however just wait until I had enough for a front arb/4.88s so I know the feeling of swapping out the front diff, it's a process for sure. I hope you enjoy your truck man, its all worth it in the end. Good job!

Ended up selling the donor 4Runner the same price I brought it for so free front and rear diff!!! ^_^

Even better is that by changing the front and rear diff it corrected my gear ratio problem cause by larger tires.

Orginal After change
Tire size 225/75/15 255/85/16
Gear ratio 3.909 4.3

Surprisingly by correcting the gear ratio my MPG improved even with a higher cruising RPM

That's awesome. Free e-locker=). Now if I only had enough cash for another 4runner...

Out of curiosity, did the buyer ask why you were selling?

How desirable are these elockers?

I'm sure anybody would want one, they just aren't cheap.. So when people come across a good deal on one, they hop on it. When I bought mine I hadn't planned on it but it was a deal I couldn't pass up.

I am in the process of doing this but for the life of me I cant figure out where the wiring harness mounts to. If possible, would you kindle take pics of both ends of the locker harness and the mounting locations and post them here or PM them to me please.
