E-Trailer Tranny cooler

Has anyone bought a trans cooler from E-Trailer? I have been looking into buying one since I don't have one. I tow from time to time and this SoCal traffic can't be that good on a tranny either. So without further stalling, if you have one that you rely on, let's see it and tell us all about it.

Which one are you looking at?

I don't know about e-trailer specifically but many have used Summit, Jeg's and I'm sure e-trailer. Here's a thread with some good ideas.


I really like toy4rner's install too especially if you do a lot of off-roading (working the transmission with little wind through the grille).

Im running a Hayden 677 on my V6. I installed it for a cross country move that involved hauling 3000lbs of gear and just wanted a little extra peace of mind. The install was very simple and the cooler itself very inexpensive so its difficult to justify NOT doing this. I did have to drill a hole in the subframe but just make sure if you decide to drill that you protect the front of the A/C condenser or this mod could become very expensive. Honestly the hardest part is figuring out how and where you want to mount it. After that its just routing lines. Make sure that whatever cooler you choose, the hose fittings are 3/8" so that it will work with the stock hose. In my opinion the 677 or 678 would both fit no problem and these sizes seem to be fairly common among other manufacturers so use these dimensionally as a size guide when shopping. Here is a pic of the final install and also one showing the metal standoffs I used to allow maximum airflow. Good luck.

One thing you should be cautious about, is not using too large of a cooler. Transmission Fluid has a certain operation temperature that needs to be maintained. Too large of a cooler drops the temperature out of that ideal range. That is why the normal cooler is in the radiator, the water temp in the radiator help maintains that temp, it also helps the transmission fluid warm up faster on cold days. If you look at the V8 version 4Runner the aux cooler is about 1/3 the size of the cooler that Synister shows in his pictures.

Also make sure you route the fluid lines in the proper order. I do not remember which way it is supposed be routed. Either from radiator to external cooler to transmission or from transmission to external cooler to radiator to transmission. The biggest thing to find out is in the stock configuration is which tube on the radiator is the in and out.
