E7008 Head unit in 2003 4runner?

I have a 2003 4Runner with JBL factory Navigation. Will the E7008 head unit work in my truck? I have searched high and low and did not know if anyone had a difinitive answer. I know I will not have voice control for the phone, but thats not an issue. Will I need to upgrade my AMP? Any help would be appreciated. Once this is installed, looking to have factory XM and AUX installed.

I just tried an 08 jbl headunit (not nav) in my 03 and it was a no go thanks to the dash bezel. My headunit sits recessed in the dash while the newer style sits flush so I would have had to replace the bezel or do a lot of trimming and hope it worked.

Did you ever resolve the issue of putting an e7008 in a 2003 T4R? I am considering the same thing. I know that it is not PNP but am wondering if there is a way to wire it to work.

If memory doesn't fail me, it should work. Voice nav most likely won't work, but I think there are ways around that.

PnP? Yes, for basic functions
PnP? NO, for BT and voice command
Sum: For basic features (audio, steering wheel controls), you should be good to go. I've been for 5 years*.

* I have a 2005 JBL but never connected the camera/BT/voice. I have the schematics and everything to install, I just never found the time.

I plugged in the e7008 with everything that fit. (I'm pretty limited in car audio electronics knowledge) The unit powers up but is stuck on a screen that says "no navigation dvd". Cant get past that screen with any buttons. So I'm wondering if I get the dvd, which I need anyway, it will work after that.

It will DEFINITELY work after you get a DVD. Start here: Toyota 4Runner Items for Sale (You want the Gen5 DVD). This is where I get mine. Every year.

I can't comment if you can get the audio part to work if you don't have the DVD.

Does anyone have the photo of the back of the JBL e7008 head unit with the description of what each connector does? Not the diagram, I have that one, but an actual photo. I've seen it before, but of course now I can't find it when I need it!

I know of one that is a picture and has a "diagram " with it, but it is from an older unit (plugs are different). If you have a diagram, you really don't need a picture as each plug is different. Here is a picture anyone of a newer one (an E7006 I think......... or E7009........... E7008 are the same damn thing)

Older NAV: note: it doesn't have the 24 pin plug. Is this the pic you were referencing? If it is, it won't do you much good.

I'll amend the above to say it MIGHT work. My E7008 died, among other things it gave the error you mentioned regardless of which DVD I tried.

Thanks guys. Just found out the problem is that the head unit is searching for the 2008 4runners ESN number. So I have a bypass harness on the way. Ill let you know what happens when I get it installed. Apparently its a theft deterrent.

Wow, never heard of that for toyota NAVs. My Honda NAV does have a 4 digit pin number one has to dial in for it to work. Anyway, i got my E7009 via fleabay and never had an installation problem with it.

So yeah, keep us informed.

Who told you that BS about the ESNs??? The OEM navs don't have the ESN security. Only Eclipse radios had the ESNs. I've had the E7006, 7007, E7008, E7009, and then another E7008 (in that order, over quite a few years) in my 2003 Limited, and electrically, the only thing I had to do was run a twisted pair wire to the amp from the head unit for voice, and add the right side switch bank on the steering wheel for BT & voice functions. Oh, and I added the mic of course, and rear camera.

The E7006 can use the amp installed in the 2003 without a problem. If you install a 7007, 7008, or 7009, you will need a newer style amp as the signal is digital. Believe me - you get some odd actions with the older amp & newer nav. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it goes full volume! You will need the newer amp.

I just so happen to have both amps for sale in the for sale section.

This first picture is of the back of an E7007 nav unit. The E7008 will be the same.

Thanks thats the photo I was looking for. The guy I bought the HU from went to the dealer and thats what they told him. I had never heard of that before with these HUs. He offered to buy it. Frankly, I think that since the HU is stuck on the "no map dvd" screen, I would think that after I get that in there, it will work. But I don't know for sure. $20 and a few days from now when I get it in the mail, I will know. Yes I do plan on replacing the amp. Like you said, the '03 is analog and doesn't have bluetooth either. I wanted to make sure the HU was going to work before the next step, amp, steering wheel controls, XM, etc. If this map dvd doesn't work, I will be returning the HU and going aftermarket.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, as soon as you plop that nav disc in there, you *should* have a fully operational set-up - Well, minus the amp, & a few easy tweaks. :nod:

Exactly! LOL, Fleabay was where I got all mine too. There sure doesn't seem to be nearly as many on there now as there were 5 - 7 years ago. The cool thing about it was when I got tired of the one I had, I could always re-sell it for close to what I bought it for! :banana:

To be brutally honest, it would be best to go aftermarket. Those units have more tech in them and will sound better. If you contact Crutchfield, they will (try) sell you harness making it plug and play. I have the OEM NAV b/c I'm capricious about having original equipment. Eventually I'll give in.

I got mine for $700 and now you seemingly can't touch one for less $900. Yes, they used to be lots on fleabay, but not so much anymore. I had the LEDs redone on mine, so I'm keeping it until 1) I get sick of it, 2) it starts to fail. Some aftermarket have Apple's CarPlay and Android Auto but can get pricey. Having that said, I could in theory sell my E7009 and pay off a great aftermarket NAV.

Totally hear ya. I love the OEM look which is why I've tolerated the NAV. Get it, install it and you will love it. Worse case scenario: you get the digital amp and if you still not convinced, you can always sell the NAV at a good price.
