Easier oil change--New Housing Available from Jowett Performance

The extra time and mess the paper filter on the 5th gen vs the old screw on filter from my Tacoma and 4th Gen. got me to looking for other options. After trying three different oil filter wrenchs, and neither working well and often sticking to the housing, I now have a set-up that makes the process much easier.

I replaced the oil drain plug with a fuomoto valve. I know use a clear tube hooked to the fuomoto for a splash free oil change.

I also purchased a new filter housing with a Fuomoto from Jowett Performance (after using on of these on my LC for six months, I was not looking forward to another messy change on the 4R. Thankfully they recently released a housing for the Toyota V6s as well (Tacoma, 4R and FJ-maybe others)

With the Fuomoto on both, I now have a splash free, easy oil change, although still a bit messier than with a disposable screw on filter. And if you are wondering, the fuomoto on the new housing does not interfere with the skid plate.

The Jowett using the spring clip and bypass from the stock filter. The included socket fits perfect and does not hit the Fuomoto valve.

I use Mobil 1 long life filters and drain the oil every 5k miles and the oil and filter every 10k miles. I found the company on the Ih8mud site, and am really impressed with the quality of the part. It is kind of pricey, but I do my own oil changes because I don't trust the lackeys at the dealership or lube shops. I want it done right. The cost of this was worth it for the easy of future oil changes.

One other thing I noted when replacing filters with the stock housing in place, is when I bought replacement filters, the Wix brand came with a screw on nipple for releasing oil from the canister filter, while others came with a push on. If you have no interest in upgrading the housing, I'd recommend getting a filter from Wix, and keep the screw on nipple for all future oil changes, as it makes less of a mess as I have had a lot of dripping with the push on version...

Yep. $105 for the base unit. $145 with the socket and drain valve. IMO, buying without the drain valve defeats the purpose.

Not the same. I have had both, this is a heavy duty (and heavy) upgrade. The Jowett cap has a fuomoto valve built in, is more stout, and works with a more robust filter wrench, that doesn't get stuck on the cap.

A 2 1/2" socket. You can buy it with the filter housing from Jowett or separately. Not sure if Harbor Freight has them, but may be the cheapest option. Here is one on Amazon:

So just so I understand this fully:

This unit replaces the bottom end and replaces the main lower housing and the need for the lower spicket washer thingy and gasket? If I understand this fully, what you gain is a valve to empty the oil filter area without replacing the filter...but if you want to replace the filter you still have to unscrew just the lower housing and swap paper element? Correct?

I do all my own changes as well, and while its not difficult sometimes I dread having to go thru the process, especially when its cold as fuc out. I do have the Fugi valve on my drain at the moment~

You can price together a kit for far less cheaper (minus the billet filter housing), and have a spill proof setup. This is what I did:

1. OEM Landcruiser metal filter housing (amazon)
2. Motivx drain kit (20ish dollars amazon), replaces the nub on filter housing.
3. fujimoto valve for oil pan (not sure how much I forgot).
4. cheapo filter wrench (9 dollars amazon)

To be honest, the billet housing is way overkill, considering the oem 4runner oil filter housing is made of plastic, and in a relatively safe location. Anyways, to each and their own.....

IF you do a search on fujimoto oil change/valve, you guys should get some hits.

+1 on the Motivx drain. Instead of the stupid plastic snap in (if you're lucky) drain, it screws into the oil filter housing and has a valve to empty the filter housing.

So by built in, you mean for an additional $25. and by more robust filter wrench, you mean a piece of formed sheet metal that costs an additional $15, for a total of $145

vs $19 metal toyota housing, $24 cast wrench from motivx and (if you want it) $24 fumoto valve.

I really don't see the gain here. As someone else mentioned, its not like this filter housing is taking hits from rocks- its tucked up and out of the way under the skid plate.

To each their own.

didn't u know that the criteria to own a 4runner is at minimum a 6 digit income? If you haven't replaced everything OEM then you need to get rid of the truck.

Exactly, to each their own. For me it is the simplicity and ease of use. I don't think a fuomoto would work on the oem housing, and even if it did, the fuomoto type valve Jowett uses has been pressure tested to have redundancy for the vehicle oil pressure. The other big thing for me was my filter wrench was always getting jammed on both the plastic and metal housing. It is just a poor removal design. The motivex looks like a decent alternative to avoid a mess, but it still requires unscrewing a cover and then screwing in this piece vs a flip of a switch. You are looking around $70 for that full setup, which is not bad. With the 15% discount on group buy, you are getting a much stronger housing that is easy to remove. I tried one of these:

and they both sucked, would get jammed, etc., which caused me to try the Jowett housing. It has made the process so much easier, I asked Brian about doing the group buy, and am going to be getting more for family members as Christmas gifts. I don't change my own oil to save money. I actually hate doing it. I just don't trust the techs at lube shops or the dealership and I want a simple process. For me the extra simplicity is worth it for me.
