Easy CEL question

Just bought a black '00 SR5 4x4, stock, 77000. Before I pick up the vehicle, the dealer is going to fix whatever issue is causing the check engine light to illuminate.
I want to make sure they do not simply remove the light bulb.

Question: In a 'healthy' vehicle, when you turn the ignition on, but do not start the engine, does the Check Engine light also illuminate temporarily with all the other dash lights, and then turn off as the engine starts?

I've had dealings with some real dodgy dealers in the past, so I'm trying to cover all my bases with this one.

Yes, but the dealer could just reset the CEL without fixing the problem in which case the CEL will stay off anywhere from a few minutes to days to weeks.... so hopefully they're not too shifty. Ask what the problem was and how it was fixed, then at least you have something to go by.

yes it does if the light comes back on have the codes pulled and come back and tell us

When the service department at the stealer works on a vehicle that they are going to sell, the produce an invoice/workorder that they use to basically charge-back the sales deptartment. Make sure you see a copy of it and find out what they did.

I bought a used Tundra from a dealer and had them pull the invoice after I asked the salesman what they had done to the vehicle in getting it ready for resale. World of difference in what the salesman had said and what was on that paper, I had them do it all..LOL

Thanks for the info guys.
The dealer called me back today and said he took the vehicle to a toyota workshop. They diagnosed a faulty mass airflow sensor and replaced it with a new one. So from what i've read in other threads this does sound like a reasonable thing to happen, but of course i will check for the new sensor (and paperwork) myself when i go in to collect the vehicle.
