Ebay Counterfeit Parts

I hope someone can help me. Purchased a kit online and everything is said to be Toyota OEM besides the idler (Koyo) and timing idler (NSK). Further research has me thinking these are not new original Toyota parts.


Anyone have any thoughts? Both cam shaft seals are black not brown like the originals. Timing belt has Chinese writing and no where says made in Japan. Water pump looks grounded out where the Toyota and Aisin labels would be but instead there is an Aisin tin sticker. And the Toyota drive belt part number does not match the denso part number.

Well some of it looks legit. The oil seals from the camshafts seals sometimes go through revisions. So they maybe OEM. The Timing belt hard to say. The OEM MFG is Aisin for the water pump but they don't grind the housing and put a sticker on it. they are actually stamped in the housing Aisin where the Toyota is stamped..

I have gotten Toyota Drive belts from the Dealer made in the USA just like that one.

So my thoughts is that some of these parts do not look right. What do other users think?

Its been over a year since I did my last timing belt, and I don't remember it saying Toyota....but it was dealer supplied....could be my memory but thought the brand started with an "M".
Everything else I used was dealer supplied including all drive belts and hoses. (Camelback or McGeorge when I still lived in the lower 48) If a person really hunts around many parts can be cheaper or competitive from dealers over part stores. Of course there are parts that the dealer is way over priced.

I use dealer parts on places that are pain to work on or get to or concern for reliability or safety.

In the above I used the word "Dealer" as not to confuse with so many saying "OEM"

An item can be a knock off, and say OEM, back in the olden days they could even say Original Equipment Supplier. But they could just be manufacturing a light bulb used on a Chevy....and claim generically to be a OEM or OES company...even if you were buying their knock off water pump for a Ford. Same will hold true for knock off or aftermarket Toyota parts. the company could be an OEM ( Original Equipment Manufacturer) but what part ?

The water pump came in an Aisin box but the Toyota & Aisin stamp seem to be grinded off and replaced with a sticker seems weird. The timing kinda weird looking too

Chinese love to put fake things in real looking boxes.


I know my asin pump I bought in my kit had the asin stamped I. The housing just like Toyota did on the OEM one I pulled off.

Well send it back and search for the legit sellers on this forum. I seen posts containing good reputatable us sellers listed on here. Parts that are legit and contain both OEM genuine and OEM mfg parts. I used I Ebay kit when I did the timing belt on my 1997 5 speed. Parts were exactly like the items listed. Had a mixture of OEM and OEM mfg parts. Belt was OEM with the cam seals. Tensioner I believe was oem. The water pump was aisin and the idlers bearing was I think Kyoto. I did mine a year or 2 ago and dont remember the seller ebay handle.

Timing belt has Chinese writing

Just an FYI, Japanese use 2 forms of writing (more like 3). They use the formal Chinese characters (Kanji) and a more modern phonetic version that you were probably expecting.

Dunno if that helps in the slightest.

How much do you think it would cost to buy a machine that made... the ceramic part of a spark plug? How much to tool up for the entire manufacturing process? Then to sell what you made for $10, each (as in the fuel injectors - a lot less for plugs). What kind of insane volume would you have to do, just to break even?

New member here, first post.
Found you guys after searching "eBay counterfeit parts", and wondering about it myself.
Two particular parts, knock sensors and MAF sensor...
Dirt cheap prices on what look to be OEM Denso parts. The ads are poorly written by people with no mastery of the English language. Coming from port cities in California and New Jersey. Often, they are marked "New, other" and explained they are in "bulk packaging". Who gets knock sensors in "bulk packaging"??
I suspect these are counterfeit, made in China, and we are seeing people whose business model includes getting shipping containers full of these items and selling them on eBay and Amazon.

On the other hand, I've done three timing belt jobs with OEM parts, in kits I purchased either on Ebay or perhaps from Rock Auto, I honestly don't remember. Of course, those kits were NOT dirt cheap like the knock sensors and MAF sensor. The parts in those kits weren't Toyota parts, rather they were from the supplier that Toyota uses like Aisin, Denso, Bando, etc. All the parts were marked Made in Japan or Made in USA and they, unlike the pictures in this thread, all looked legit. I have between 50 and 80K on each of three Toyotas on which I have installed these parts, with zero issues. So you CAN get good parts.

So this thread confirmed my suspicions about counterfeit parts.

Also, I don't own a 4Runner yet. I used to have one, but now I have two Highlanders, a Tundra, and a Sequoia. They share lots of the same parts as your 4Runners and I'm buying a 4Runner to replace the Sequoia sometime!
