A virus is the best killing machine out there: simple, undetectable, able to adapt rather quickly to its environment and takes life with impunity as shown by the picture of that little girl Brian linked up. Only far swings in temperature (cold, and especially heat) can damage it quickly or stop it in its tracks along with chemical drugs. Agent Smith put its description into words very well in 1999.

As long as it contained, it won't spread. If it takes off, I am on my houseboat ten miles off the Atlantic coastline. To attempt to contain it in Africa, a scorched earth policy after treatment per se may need to be implemented. If there is no host for Ebola to invade within a salubrious environment for it to reproduce in, it won't survive.

I've tried to start several discussions about the Ebola epidemic with friends and coworkers but it seems hardly anyone is taking the level of interest I am, outside of your usual crackpot comments at the end of web articles.

I cheated because I've been drinking and have a friend picking me up soon so i didn't read the thread. But is this something we should be worried about? I know Neil deGrasse Tyson told me one night at dinner that one thing that could potentially end the human race is a plague. Is this our battle or should I just shut up and read the thread in the morning?

We should have cancelled any and all flights to and from West Africa... The only way to beat this is to isolate and contain. For those who say its so hard to do... The FAA wrongly did it to Israel just a few months ago...

Now, I read this thread on my lunch break and it reinforced one thing to me: The reason CDC and WHO and other reputable organizations who know the real story, won't publish everything precisely because people in other places behave exactly like people in this thread. That is, they just take rumors, half truths and their own half baked ideas and put them out there as fact.

I truly am ignorant about this disease and most diseases. I know emergency medicine...nothing else. I will depend on more knowledgeable (read official) people than me to figure it out. Even the first post, talking about linear regression has so many variables to make it nothing more than worst case. To the guy who just did this in DiffEq, tell them! Tell them how one little change somewhere that should have no bearing on anything will completely change those curves! I know the math unfortunately I do not know all the variables and neither does anyone on the face of this earth.

This is a sad and disturbing disease. One that should demand attention. I am reading about it but I AM NOT PARTAKING IN CONJECTURE on it because somehow that is how bad information gets started, then it spreads just like the curve in the first post!

While some of you think the Government is lying (and they do that often) who else do you have? Some quack on a website? A Wiki post? A friend of a friend? Sorry but so far the CDC has not been proven wrong nor has WHO. So my advice is to take all this with a grain of salt. If you are at high risk because of location or job then pay attention to the official handouts. I pray for our guys in uniform and hope they all come back safely.

I think every thread on this site has at least a few janky comments in it, but overall I think people are sharing good information and putting forth interesting opinions. The CDC and WHO have not exactly been proven wrong, but its their research and projections that show 1.4 million infected in just Sierra Leone and Liberia by January, and their estimated cost of containment currently sits somewhere around $36 Billion. Added to the fact that they have stated publicly that they are not completely certain of the virus' mode of transmission, and one Spanish and one American nurse have been infected despite 1st world decontamination procedures and materials, I think we are justifiably concerned.

The official handouts are kind of a joke; have you read the CDC website?

Wash your hands; that's basically it. They aren't even advising that people avoid travel to West Africa, only that you should avoid hospitals and funerals there. Oh and don't touch dead people.

The CDC is aware of modes of transmission. What isn't clear is how long the virus can live on Inaminent objects in grease or film. Either way, wash your hands and don't touch your face.

I don't mean to trivialize Ebola but the vast majority of us need to treat it like we treat weather. We cannot do anything to stop either disease or weather but we can protect ourselves and stay away from it as much as possible. We can second guess the weatherman (or the CDC) but in reality we still have to deal with it if it comes no matter what happens. So keep a close eye on the forecasts and even though chances are it will miss the majority of us it pays to be ready. Again I am not trivializing this horrible disease just trying to put it in terms I understand.

Its a silly statement because im a silly guy, but in all seriousness you probably think that it was terrorist that did 9-11 too. And yes, I know that the government lies all the time, I am in the government. The common man is stupid and will believe just about anything. There was recently a scare in my home city as someone was thought to possibly have ebola. They recently came from Liberia, had a fever, etc. But they found out that it wasn't apparently.
Makes me wonder if they would ever be hushing the case/giving false information to keep the public calm. I'm probably just fantasizing though. They would have to completely remove him from society and keep his family, friends, coworkers quiet. Anyone he knows or is connected to. Then they'd have to keep all the workers quiet.
