Why are we giving billions to Iraq in free aid yet America is only ponying up a few million for the Ebola crisis.

We waste our money overseas on these crappy wars and yet there is no money to find Ebola research, prevention, health worker training, and equipment funding here in the US.

Ebola has the potential to be a game changer, the largest crisis that man has faced in most of our lifetimes.

In interviewing the Dallas nurse, the LA Times was told by the nurse there was no protocol for treating a possible Ebola patient at the hospital. None. Zero. Duncan was allowed to be in the area with other patients for several hours.

Ok CDC, your funds did not get pulled during budget cuts, yet your passive approach to this situation just reeks of government ineptness. So much red tape and bulls&^t one needs wings just to stay above it. When Ebola spread to the first major airport in Nigeria it should have been mission critical time. I don't want to hear about the pitiful government salary excuse for not giving 100% 24/7 to be prepared for multiple scenarios; if such is the case it is a free country, go and get another job then. But the problem, as 1engineer stated some time ago, there aren't many private sector jobs out there anymore. But that is for another discussion.

An experimental drug of the Zpack family type was given to the doctor and aid worker who were the first two Americans in Africa to contract Ebola. The drug in a nutshell prevents the virus from attaching and then being engulfed in blood cells, thus giving the body ample time to combat and kill Ebola. The problem is that the drug is in extreme short supply and there is no incentive for drug companies to make it. I guess that those companies can argue that it isn't in their shareholders best interest to do such, but if one's shareholders die off, who will then buy the stock?

Not surprised. I've always been extremely curious about how a couple of the best trained docs in the world with full hazmat protective gear contracted the virus.

My friend, I don't mean to scare you but if you are going to be worried about things beyond your control then Ebola should be the least of your concerns. There are 100's of things (take your pick: water supply is my favorite) that could devastate the US. Again, I am concerned but I can only control my own actions against something like this.

It has already mutated airborn once before so any articles you read saying that will never happen, it would be like HIV going airborn and can't happen are wrong. Dead wrong. It is called the Reston Ebola Strain and it is named after the researchers that discovered it in Reston Virginia after it killed 50-60% of the lab monkeys during the outbreak. It also infected 4 humans and their blood confirmed the infection. That mutation, although fully airborn (think AC ducts transmission) lost its human lethality but the next mutation might not.

It can live in many liquid substances (from sweat to tapwater .. Yes tapwater) that is exposed to the open air for 5+ days and then still be able to infect new cells at 5 days later. This has been proven by the US Army and CDC. Compare this to 20-30 seconds with HIV.

This virus is older than mankind.

It is considered an emerging virus in humans because it is only just now breaking through in our species. This is the beginning.

This outbreak might very well get out of control in Africa. Edit: Doctors without Borders & the WHO are now stating it is out of control and not slowing down.

We could VERY LIKELY be facing a future where millions inin Africa are wiped and mini Ebola outbreaks become a new norm in 1st world countries. And that is assuming it doesn't become airborn and retain its lethality.

ISIS is a joke compared to how dangerous Ebola can be.

This is new uncharted territory for the human race. All the previous outbreaks were contained and involved less than 320 victims. Groups are now predicting 10,000 new cases a week by Thanksgiving if it isn't stopped.

If there was ever something to call your congressman about it is this issue.

Every one is always looking at the negative, on the plus side there would be less traffic to deal with. There would also be a lot of job openings. Death rate = 49.9%
Liberia has had 4,249 cases in a total population of 4,092,310 people. Infection rate of 0.104%.
Sierra Leone has had 3,252 cases in a total population of 5,743,725 people. Infection rate of 0.057%.
Guinea has had 1,472 cases in a total population of 11,474,383 people. Infection rate of 0.013%.
Nigeria has had 20 cases in a total population of 177,155,754 people. Infection rate of 0.0000113%.
USA has had 3 cases in a total population of 318,892,103 people. Infection rate of 0.0000009%.
Senegal has had 1 case in a total population of 13,635,927 people. Infection rate of 0.0000073%.
Spain has had 1 case in a total population of 47,737,941 people. Infection rate of 0.0000021%.

Main cause of death = Loss of fluids/Dehydration

Although the numbers show it is HIGHLY unlikely that many will contract this virus it is still very unsettling. The United States, supposedly the leader of the civilized world, has bumbled our way through this initial phase in the most embarrassing way. We should be ashamed.
I don’t understand why we have continued allowing non-essential personnel to travel freely between West Africa and the United States. How dumb are we, or not we, but our supposed “highly intelligent leaders…”
And I just read that the 101s Airborne Is now being deployed… good god. Our finest being sent to do what USAID and the State department should be doing… Be praying for them and their safety.

appointing someone to be in charge who has a political rather than medical background tells me that obama is more concerned at this point about doing political damage control rather than giving it medical guidance and attention

While I will not dispute your claim that war is a money machine where defense contractors and their political buddies make big bucks, I think you must broaden that statement to the following: The government machine is a money machine. The best way to get and stay rich now days is to run for and hold public office... haha. We're screwed.

My grandfather used to say "vote for the new guy". At least it'll take him a year or two to really learn how to screw us over vs. the guy in office already knows how.

The problem is they (higher gov't officials) are definitely not on the same playing field as the citizens that pay their salary. They get different health care, retirement, vacations, perks, different laws apply to them at times. It's a joke. If they were in "danger" or at risk like the rest of us I think they might change their tune. I suggest the central triage for all Ebola cases be staged in the Oval Office.

It looks like the majority posting here have bought the fear being spread.

Some statistics - The World Health Organisation says there were 1.5 million death from HIV in 2013 and that 39 million people have died. In 2012 there was an estimated 627,000 malaria deaths. Estimates from WHO suggest that in 2008 about 16 million cases of pertussis occurred worldwide. Cardiovascular disease killed an average of one American every 40 seconds. Add in the "common flu" and pneumonia and there's a whole lot more people dying from diseases that have been around forever.

Nobody complains about lack of money for these, why now? You do know how Ebola speeds, right? Not easily like many of the above.

This "scare" is minor and being fed by news agencies looking for headlines, politicians doing the same, etc. Even a Faux News reporter criticized his peer for spouting off about the "epidemic."
