ECM swap

So as some of you know I’ve been dealing with an annoying AC issue.

After a lot of diagnostics I believe my ECM may been the culprit.

I obtained a used ECM from another 99 4Runner and it has a chipped key with it. Is there anything I need to do to get it to work in my SR5?

If it has an immobilizer (chipped keys) then your SR5 doesn’t have the components and wiring/connectors necessary to read the chipped key to allow the ecm to start the engine.

It would be a lot of work to add the necessary components in order to make your new ecm work with your current vehicle. I’d recommend finding another ecm that doesn’t have an immobilizer. If it helps with your search, for your year only Limited trims have an immobilizer in the ecm.

See if you can match the part number of your ecm in your rig now.. Like Badluck says your rig cant use that ecm for the wiring not being there.:-(

Unless you are handy with electronics and want to desolder / solder an 8-pin SOIC EEPROM on the board...

I've learned that the ECMs have to be a perfect part number match in order to guarantee 100% compatibility, it's printed on the top of the case. Even if you pick the same year and drivetrain, like 99 4WD, there are still some minute differences based on trim models and other options. Sorry you had to learn that the hard way, I would try and return it back to the yard/company you got it from for a credit.

So, luckily the guy I bought it from may have one out of 99 SR5.

Also, I was curious; has anyone ever heard about jumping pins 4 and 13 on the OBD2 connector? I hear it will reset and relearn the key in many Toyotas.
