ECU Replacement

After about a year of dealing with a defective ECU that refuses to lock my car doors - I've finally ordered a repalcement ECU. The question I have is, do i have any other options other then having the dealership reprogram the ECU to accept the keys that I have? Or can i program them myself?

You cannot program it yourself. You can program new keys after you have a master key programmed in, but that's about it. The reason you need someone else to do it is because of the engine immobilizer circuit.

Your options are the dealer, or a locksmith. I had a mobile locksmith come to my house and do it for $225. I bought a used ECM off eBay for $130 or so.

Your ECU refuses to lock your doors? The power door locks have their own brain box for that. Your ECU only runs your engine/trans..

Do I smell a stealership rip off? Or is there more to the story?

I agree, I'd look at the box in the liftgate first...unless you've already done that.

you DO NOT need the ECU

It is called the junction box. Mine is doing the EXACT same thing.
I have a 2000 Limited.

Search this forum. it is called a JUNCTION box. It runs about $170 or so and no you do not need the dealership.

It is under the driver's side panel near the main fuse area.

Please someone correct me if I am wrong.

Yeah - the dealership is the one who told me I needed to replace the ECU. I'll have a look at this junction box.

ambush, could you please provide me the part number of the junction box and where could I find it?

I have a 2000 4runner and mechanic says its the junction box (body control module) that needs to be replaced.

The problem im having is the back door does not work from the switch inside nor the back wiper. Could this be the solution to the problem?
