electric to manual t-case mod?

AWD means multi-mode. Is there a TC that gives you J-shift and multi-mode? I thought you only got 4WD with J-shift. The center diff is built into the TC so if you put in a J-shift that only has 4WD you lose the AWD.

Thats what im looking for i want to eliminate the awd and just strictly have 4wd with j shifter. But i want to know the process of wiring or if its been done before.

thank you

Just fixed this issue a month ago...turned out to be the front actuator. I did verify the 2 pin indicator switch on the transfer case was ok while i was at it. I also removed the actuator cover on the transfer case and did an inspection/cleaning/regreasing. Also, once the actuator cover is removed, you can push the actuator shaft in and out to verify is moves...might be a little clunky but if it moves in and out that a good sign. Just make sure you put it exactly back to it's original position. There are some good how-to's on this if you search around a little more.

However, I too would be interested in a manual shift conversion if one were available

I fixed mine by removing the solenoid and cleaning it, its all good now. I thought you had done a full swap to 4wd jshifter. I'm trying to figure out all the options while its not broken. I always feel like its better to replace parts when you want to rather then need to.

Well, the ghetto version is real simple. You just put a simple SPDT switch in the cab and have it switch 12V+ between the two VSVs on the fenderwall. $2 and I could wire up in 15 minutes. Engage 4wd on the J-shift for the TC, flip switch to engage front diff.

If you wanted to not have to use the switch, you'd need something a little more elaborate substituting a relay for the 4wd ECU as is normal on 5-speeds. Maybe you could cross the switches on the J-shift to fool the 4wd ECU into switching the front diff automatically, but that would take some real thought and playing with the EWDs. Maybe someone has done it, I don't know.

If you just left the center diff locked all the time wouldn't a j-shift case still send the 12V to the ADD relay when shifted into 4 hi? If it did that would actuate the slide collar. Once that engaged it would light the 4wd light on the dash.

I haven't looked closely at multi-mode cases but I can't imagine that the actual t-case switches are that different. The driver side rear switch is the neutral position switch. The drivers side front switch is the 4Lo position switch and the passenger side switch is the 4Hi position switch on a j-shift case. I would think, out loud, that as long as the connectors where the same from multi to j-shift for those 3 switches it would almost be plug and play.

I don't think it's that easy. Multi-mode systems use an ECU not a simple relay. The J-shift cases only have two switches, 4WD and 4L. no neutral switch. Something would have to be done about that. I doubt the ECU would be happy if that switch loop is permanently open or permanently closed. Even more concerning is that the ECU gets feedback from the electric TC actuator and if that is not present I think it would go into fatal confusion, as far as switching the front ADD goes. Blinking Yellow light time.

I don't understand your first sentence. J-shift TCs don't have a center diff and, as I said, there is no relay on the multi-mode truck.

There may be workarounds to all of this, but I'll bet someone would want to kick the rear of the guy who told him it was "almost plug and play."

The fist sentence is if you swapped a j-shift to multi-mode. I understand there's no center diff lock in a j-shift case. J-shift cases do have a neutral switch. It's what causes the ATP light to come on. You won't ever see it unless you put the case in neutral. Then it will come on. So, like I stated, three switches.

As far as the multi-mode ECU goes I'm sure your right it would confuse it. I trust you and your electrical knowledge with these rigs.

My 5-speed J-shift has no ATP light and no neutral switch. Two switches. I didn't know about it on J-shifts for slushboxes. But you are right, it's shown in the EWD.

Indeed, I know almost nothing about slushboxes and I try to keep it that way.

Whats up everybody, im actually in the process of getting rid of my lefty tcase and swapping it for a J-Shift. As far as the ADD im just going to manually actuate it permanently. I will keep everybody updated once everything goes in and what axles i used. As of now my only step to figure out is converting the 2wd trans 2001 SR5 to a 4wd. I stumbled upon this searching for it. If somebody can point me in the right direction i will greatly appreciate it.

I'm not sure if im miss understanding or if im not explaining it correctly. im looking to make it 100% manual with out and actuators, servos, solenoids. Im looking for a direct shift linkage like in an xj. I dont care if the lights on the dash work cause i know its in because its manual. Again sorry if im using the word terms hopefully this comes across correctly

How are you going to engage/disengage the front diff without an actuator in there? If there is a manual way to do it I have never heard of it. The only thing you might do is lock up the ADD permanently and convert to manual hubs. Plenty of people have done that.

Little late to the response here, but anyway the factory drive shafts for the j-case transmission fit, the rear shaft is about 4 inch longer and the front is about 4in shorter as the j case in about 4in shorter then the multimode case, so its a direct bolt on with the factory shafts.

As far a the wiring goes, to get the lights on the dash to work, there are sensors on the case that sense where the shifter is. these send to the 4wd ecu and then it looks for a signal to read if the actuators are in the right position, since you no longer have a multimode case with this actuator obviously it will never get that signal so the lights will always flash indicating that is still tying to shift. i just put this signal on a switch and would flip it on or off to tell the ecu that the actuator is in place. it sort of worked but it would still get into a confused mode but if i turned the key off and on it would reboot and read it correctly and lights would all be happy.

for what you are doing i would just pull the dash lights and put the front ADD on a switch to engage and disengage it when you want. that is the part that gets to be a pita to get the ecu to talk between the j-case position sensors/actuator and then tell the ADD actuator to engage or disengage.

Put the front ADD actuator on a 12v switch and you should be able to just remove the entire 4wd ecu with a j-case swap.

My ADD is just engaged fulltime and i just use my arb locker to either lock it up or not, but my 4runner isnt street legal and i'm pretty much never in 2wd so it doesnt bother me that that shaft is always engaged.

So, the electrically actuated transfer case on the R151f transmission with can be swapped out to a manual j-shifter transfer case? I am swapping my 2WD to 4WD and have the electrically shifted case (with all the switches and pushbutton) I don't have the control unit. But, I really don't need all that. I don't have e-locker axles, and none of that really matters. If it's possible to swap a manual j-shift t-case on to it, that would be great. It sounds like it is possible. What do I need to know to make sure the t-case will mount to it? Spline counts (even though I think these can be changed if they don't match)? Shaft lengths? Thanks!

I found this video Recently talking about rigging a switch to the vacuum lines that actuate the front diff. hopefully, this helps.

J Shifter 4wd Transfer Case Swap on 1998 4Runner - YouTube

It seems like I'm in the same boat as most of you guys I've got a 96 Limited (no locker) 4wd recently started grinding on engagement and today it stopped engaging entirely. haven't done much to diagnose the issue other than check fuses and relays, but if it's going to be a large expense I'd rather just ditch the button and swap to a J Case or a Multi-Mode.
