Electrical Drain

Hey Guys...
I've recently noticed a loss of electrical power on my 97 SR5 V6. I do have an audio system with amp and subs, and if I turn the volume up to much, the radio will shut off. I'm assuming to a lack of power. Lights dim as well. Not a "significant" audio setup. Only a 1000 watt amp with a farad cap.
Also, even with the radio off, and if my headlights are on, if I roll up a window, I can hear the engine "strain" while the window motor is engaged. Took a look at the alternator, and it is pretty cruddy in there with some mud. Could this be the cause? Truck has 185,000 miles on it and I thought that these alternators could last around 300k. I don't have any equipment to test voltage. Any thoughts on what and how to check would be appreciated!

Sounds like you need a new alternator. It's an easy DIY. Also, get one that puts out more if you are going to run more amps.
Alternators do NOT last that long. I've replace a couple of them on cars that had 100k to 150k miles. Of course....MUD doesn't help.

Has anyone posted a detailed "how-to" on replacing the alternator? I just took a look at my farad cap and saw the readings. They did not look good. Just with the headlights on and no music being played (amp and stereo were on, but cd player was paused) I was reading right at 12.5 volts. Then I turned the music up and it was reading almost below 11. I think my next step before the alternator is to upgrade the big three with larger wires......

Probably will have to do more than that soon since I'm about to install a 2000watt amp.
