Electrical issues with my 97 4runner

I recently purchased my 4x4 97 4runner with 99,xxx miles. It drives great and i am very happy with the purchase.

About a week after i purchased it, the radio, power locks, and dome light all went out. I took it to the dealer and they said it was just a blown fuse, as i suspected. That was roughly 3 weeks ago.

As of yesterday my radio, power locks, dome light, and now even my clock is out. I went and replaced the 30A power fuse thinking it would fix the problem but it didnt.

What i find really strage is that the clock works but only when i turn my hedlights on, and even then it is very very dim.

Has this ever happened to anyone and if so how can i go about fixing it?

My '97 just started experiencing this exact symptom yesterday. It was a blown 15A dome light fuse under the hood but once I replaced it and attempted to turn on the radio, it blew out again.

Sounds like your radio is taking ALL its power from the dome circuit. This is probably causing an overload. Main power should come off an ignition-on only circuit. The always-on dome circuit goes to the radio only to maintain the clock and settings and is a separate power wire. One is usually yellow and the other red. Does your radio work when the car is off? If so, you need to feed the main power from a different fuse--or run a new main power from the fuse box with an in-line fuse if you want it to work when the engine is off.

When wired correctly, turning on the radio should have little or no effect on the draw on the dome circuit.
