Electrical Problem -

My keyless entry does not work, my maplights don't work, my door courtesy lights don't work, my clock doesn't keep the time (always resets), the mpg/avg speed numbers are not saved (resets when vehicle turned off), dome light doesn't work. I believe all these are linked together somewhere. I checked the main fuse panel under the steering column but all were in working order. No power is running to lights when vehicle is off or on. Runs fine otherwise.

Is there a switch or relay somewhere that may have shorted out? Anyone have any ideas? I did a search but it doesn't look like anyone else has had this problem.

What year and model truck?
How handy are you with electrical troubleshooting?
All these items seem to have the Body ECU in common. I'm thinking if the ECU was bad you would throw a code or possibly not if there is no power. So it looks like a fuse or common ground point issue.
Your wireless remote won't lock or unlock the doors? Do you still here the beep or double beep even though the door locks don't work? Will the rear window go down with the remote? Do the power door locks work from the switches on the doors? All of them work or some or none?

2005 sr5 4wd

nothing works with the wireless remote, no beeps no locking or unlocking, no rear window action, no flashing lights -- all door locks work from door switches

no interior lights work, i used a multimeter on the door courtesy light wire and no juice is coming through with vehicle on or off.

the clock keeps time when vehicle is on but resets when turned off - not getting any juice when off is my professional guess -- same with the mpg/avg speed computer resets when off

i'm sure the interior lights have common fuse and common ground since none of them are working -- the wireless must be on the same circuit, -- maybe, i hope

the only thing i can think that happened is that the power wire for the driver door courtesy light touched the ground wire for the driver door courtesy light and that caused the problem - those were the only exposed wires

the fuse under the dash looked ok, i don't know if there is another one somewhere - don't know if there is a switch or relay that may have been fried

a blown fuse must be the problem though since no power is getting through anywhere but why would the clock work when car is on but not when off. if fuse is bad the clock shouldn't get any power either -- i would think -

i have some basic electrical skills and can test stuff if i know where to find the parts to test - i cant work on it until this weekend - obviously not too busy at work right now though -- actually my priorities in order of importance are 4runner #1 work #2

if you have any ideas toss them this way

I'm going to try and attach the 3 diagrams that I think are involved (from my '04.)
There are also fuses involved that are in the main underhood fuse box.
There is no ground "wire" on the door switches (the switch body is the ground.) Do you get the door open symbol in the instrument cluster with the key out of the ignition?

What do you mean? What were you doing to the truck before everything stopped working?

i was adding some lights to the footwell and was going to tap into the door wires so that when the door opened the lights would come on. Toyota doesn't give you any extra wire to work with and everything is tightly compacted together somehow the wires may have touched. that's the only thing i can think of. i wasn't working on anything else. i'm going to try to fix it myself first. i hate going to the shop

Why didn't you say so up front? We could have helped you faster. If live wires touch ground then you should have noticed a spark. Check the fuses in both fuse boxes.

Lesson learned: ALWAYS pull the fuse for the circuit you are working on OR pull the NEG battery cable(s).

good advice on on cutting off the power before doing electrical work -- learned my lesson the hard way

i looked at wiring diagrams last night and it looks like the wires run through the body ecu before they hit any fuses. that would be bad for me. if thats the case, did i screw up the ecu? can i fix that or does it have to be replaced?

i haven't had a chance to check the fuses under the hood yet. it's cold and dark when i get home. i'll have to do that this weekend. the fuses under the dash looked like they were ok. i'll pull them again this weekend and test them to make sure. if they are ok then the ecu must be screwed up, right? $$$$

Sorry, doesn't look promising. Looking at the diagrams, the 3 fuses involved are all under the dash. These are further protected back up the circuit by higher amp fuses. If these were blown then other items on the truck wouldn't work. Do you see the open door symbol on the instrument panel when a door is open? Having a door switch wire hit ground would be just like opening a door. This should not have fried anything. Were you wiring the light from another power circuit and trying to use the switch as the circuit trigger? If you fried the Body ECU then it is a replacement ($$$), not repairable.

BACK IN ACTION

got the car back from the shop.

problem -- blown fuse !?!?!?!!!?

It was a fuse in the engine compartment.

I was pretty sure I checked all the fuses, but apparently not.

Anyway, everything seems to be running fine now.

Lessons learned
1> disconnect power before messing with electrical stuff

2> if electrical isn't working, check the fuses four times so you don't have to make an unnecessary trip to the shop

they didn't charge me. took them a whole five minutes to figure it out.

Dude, thats some scary shite to think you may have messed up your ECU, next time just take your time when doing electrical work. The extra hour you spend doing the job correctly will totally pay off in the end. :

maybe you can help me. I have a 99 4runner limited and the locks are all messed up. the power unlock funtion works from the remote and door switch but the power lock funtion doesn't work from either
any ideas??
