Electronic lockers

I have 2002 4Runner with the electronic lockers (I think). and when I drive down the road dry surface the rear locker is kicking in. Before it was rare and quick but now it stay locked and smell like something is overheating (assuming the diff).

What could this be?

'02's didn't come with the e-locker as an option so I don't think thats your problem. Common thing with these trucks in the joints need to be greased on a regualr basis and most ppl neglect this. Try greaseing the u-joints and shafts and see if the problem goes away.

is it jolting from side to side?

an auto locker, (if you bought this thing used, maybe someone put a LSP or a auto locker in it) and it will jolt on start off.

but like said, ujoints may be the cause

however youd feel vibration at coasting due to the wabble of the joints.

sometimes they will give a hard pedal feel as you push on the gas.

what does it smell like? ass? thats your diff. go smell some gear oil and if it has some similarity, its either your gears, or tcase maybe.

This thing is still stock and this isn't u-joints. i own an 83 jeep also that ate u-joints like crazy. it doesn't smell like rear end dope. i am going to check the dope level today though. the jolting is like i slam on the brakes quick and then back on the gas and it feels different in the driveline. like it is stiff.

while this is happening i can hear a clicking in the truck like it is electronic and the seat belt locks and unlocks.

i need to know what type of rear end this thing has in it. i know that when it is in 4wd the rear locks and i have a diff lock for the transfer case.

i really don't know much about this 4runner yet just what I have read in the manual.

you have a center diff lock, not a differential locker. big difference.

center diff lock just makes it basically a geared case. unlocked cases can handle roadway 4wd making it awd.

now stiff huh? seems like their is an uneccessary pressure on your driveshaft. lube up the area where it slips, see if that gives it a little more play.

can you move the shaft at all when in park? it should move just a little bit. if it moves a lot, then yes its your ujoints!

if it doesnt move it all, its getting binded up from the case to the diff flange.

ok the rear diff was low it seems to have fixed it. we will see.

Thanks all for helping i know where to come if I have anymore questions.
