Electronic Throttle Question

Has Toyota ever had a failure of the electronic throttle that would cause the vehicle to accelerate on it's own with your foot off of the pedal? At first when I got my 04 4Runner the thought of having a runaway vehicle while I was stopped or in slow moving traffic did cross my mind. I imagine throttle response is better with an electronic throttle opposed to a manual linkage.

My last 3rd generation 4 runner was a 00 and it had a throttle linkage. Did the 01 or 02 have the throttle linkage as well? I wondered when toyota started using the electronic throttle. I now own an 06 SR5 V8

I got rid of my 00 4-runner because it developed piston slap

I believe 2003 was the first year with drive by wire.

It could be my imagination but I do notice an ever so slight half-second lag between a quick pedal depress and the engine response sometimes. My old Acura integra still has a cable and the response is noticeably more instantaneous. I know it's apples and oranges, but I guess the 4Runner's ECU has some processing time to determine what you intend given the situation.

My fear is that my 4Runner will someday become sentient and self-aware one day and take over the electronic drive by wire throttle control all by itself a'la SkyNet.

You will notice some "acceleration" when you take your foot off the brake. The ECU is constantly trying to keep everything in check so I do notice that once you let go of the brake, the ECU tends to increase the RPM's slightly (maybe in anticipation of accelerating?). After a week or so, I got used to it, now I barely notice it anymore.

The fail safe mode for the drive by wire system is zero speed. If for any reason the drive by wire system fails, you cannot accelarate. A slight lag in the drive by wire system is a common complain, but any vehicle that has a vehicle stability system in it will have drive by wire, its something we have to learn to live with until they improve on it.
