I own a 2001 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD 4dr SUV (3.4L 6cyl 4A).
I've had it almost 2 years now, and it's hitting close to 190,000 miles. Most of which were on the car when it got it. But Even then I have experianced only minor problems, and I love this car. I've really only had to replace my front break shoes. And tires.
Now when I got the car, I was out driving when Out of no where this grinding sound that was very loud and alarming started, I got home we pull the tire of and my breaks on the passenger side are metal to metal. (I know nothing about cars, this is all of what was explained to me, so if I'm not using the right terms, Very sorry.) So we replaced the breaks, and I've been good to go, other than Replaceing tires, oil changes, and a break light blown, nothings been a problem.
Until about 2 week's ago. We did have a very sudden change in whether. Being from Ohio it's typical. But it had gotten pretty cold. And I was heading home from work around 3 am, when it was even colder. When I notice this noise coming from the From passenger side. The only way I can really describe it is it reminded me of a plane. It wasn't a wistle, or a tick, or griding.
I come from a family of Mechanics, and I talked to them about it the next morning, and they all came to the conclusion that it's "probably" a belt not to worry about it and someone would check it out...
2 weeks later, I'm driving to work, I just get of a highway going about 55, turn onto a road, I hit about 30mph when My car comes to a sudden loud stop. It made a noise that mad me think I my engine fell out and I was screwed.
But the car still ran, it sounded fine once the car come to the complete stop. Only My car wouldn't move. Not even an inch.
So, I get some help to come out n see if they can figure out what the hell just happened, and hopefully get the car home. So It came down to it was something in the rear end. And I kept telling them, It felt as if Someone Pulled the emergency break and I was jolted to a very bad stop. That's all that I could think to desribe how it felt. So they get under there and there looking, and it appears my emergency break is "stuck on". So I get in the car and at first I pumped my breaks a few times, I dunno why, just thought to see what happens, and I got the car to start moving again, but it starts making this noise again. Which if I had to desribe it, it would be that it was if there was a large metal something just spinning around and banging as hard as it could to the underneath of my car. So they had me pump the emergency break while they watched the back tire (this was the back drivers side) and they said the emergency break was definitley not moving, on that side but was on the passenger.
I ended up having to have the car towed home.
They get the emergency break released. and I barely move the car maybe 5 feet and while it's moving fine I still hear a noise but it sounds like its coming from up front. Long story short on that problem, it ended up being my front Passenger's side Rotter(?) so we replaced that and the front breaks.
Hope in the car and the oringinal problem is back.
While trying to drive the car forward, it is moving, but as it moves Its literally as if you can feel whats about to happen. Like as if your twisting an object and you can feel it getting tighter and tighter, and then is just snaps. That's what it feels like. Your moving forward OR backwards in the car, and it builds up to this Loud BANG of metal. And it jerks the car.
It appears that the emergency break has once again gotten stuck. Even though the car hadn't been moved since they took it off the first time, nor has the emergency break when used, EVER.
They're saying, possibly my axel, possibly my self adjuster, possibly the spider web (if that's what its called. Or maybe just the emergency break again.
SORRY for the long story of my cars life it seems, I just wanted to give as much detail that I could in hopes someone could steer me in the right direction to getting this fixed. I have work in 2 days, this is my only car. I just paid it off literally the day I came to the joltering stop. Like I'm hoping it's nothing thats gonna cost anything major.
