I have a baofeng uvr as well great little radio and can get tons of accessories like a car mount antenna to really reach out with signal. Can learn all you need to know on YouTube about all its functions. I have no license for ham radio but let's be honest if SHTF and you mark up on it or use it to contact loved ones or like minded people anyone think the fcc will be tracking you down??? If you do your crazy lol

Stay on FRS and you'll be fine. It's when you start doing regular VHF/UHF that you'll need a license to TX. IMO, it's easy to get and worth it, especially now that they've eliminated the morse requirement for General.

Yeah lucky my work radio is a UHF kenwood tk3180 and has everything I could ever need in my state anyway law/Ems/fire etc....

Looks like you also have encryption on that rig. I've got a bunch of older Motorola Sabre radios with the Securenet feature (and key loader) which I use for short range secure comms. Not as fancy as the Kenwood, but it gets the job done and gives anyone who wants to become sterile a way to do so without chemicals.

I have some other odds and ends that I can't think of- but that is pretty much it. Glad my wife is cool and likes guns, knives and survival almost as much as I do. Truck is always loaded up and ready.

Some things I recommend:

1) USE YOUR GEAR! Try it out, see what works and what doesn't. TEST THAT SHIT! Can you carry that ruck sack you filled with stuff for 10 miles? Does that fire starter actually work or will it shit the bed when needed? Is your knife robust enough to do what you need it to and last?

2) Solar blankets suck at keeping you warm unless you have another outer blanket to insulate your from cold ground or a cold car seat. Solar blankets on there own suck- get a wool blanket.

3) Make sure you have a deck of cards or some form of entertainment- if you've ever really been stuck or in a rough situation- it helps to keep your mind from focusing on the negative aspects of your situation and have a way to escape for a moment.

4) Don't rely on your phone for maps, navigation, etc. Get a map of your state and a compass. Learn how to navigate.

5) Have a realistic plan for whatever situation you may find yourself in. Being a few minutes ahead of the pack if you need to bug out in an urban or suburban environment will be the difference between getting out and getting stuck with the masses. Have a plan to ditch the vehicle and go on foot if need be.

6) Don't skimp on survival gear, guns, knives, tools, etc. BUY ONCE AND CRY ONCE! If its cheap it's not a survival tool- it's future trash.

AND the 2 MOST important of all: MINDSET and TRAINING!

Having all these tools is worth basically nothing if you don't know how to use them and have the proper mindset to use them and survive. Especially weapons.

Most people in rough situations die because they give up- not because they couldn't go on- but simply because they are not mentally hardened to cope with a tough situation and they just give up.

Get your mindset squared away and really think about decisions you may have to make and how you will find strength to survive in rough spots.

Keep your heads on a swivel gents. Situational awareness.

There will be some sort of terror event here in the USA soon. With all the derka derka 'fugees coming from the Middle East and the homegrown derka derka nuts- it is just a matter of time. Malls, stadiums, religious events/gatherings, concert halls, etc- are all soft targets with a lot of sheep- the wolves know this.

Our gummint is not going to be able to help or save you, local LEO's are not going to be able to help or save you- YOU are the only line of defense you have when shit goes sideways- be prepared to react if the time comes.

Getting your license is well worth the effort, my friends. There's plenty of repeaters throughout the US worth tuning into and RACES/ARES are invaluable in times of inclimate weather. It's also a way to inadvertently learn about other areas of interest (short wave and numbers stations, for example, or IRLP).

I used to be interested in prepping (the shows, the community, the effort), but quickly realized that we live in a country where AT MOST you'll face is localized weather phenomenon (unless you live on the coast where hurricanes are prevalent and represent the need for a 72 hour option). Even riots/civil unrest is mostly localized and easily escapable without the need for an over the top bug out plan.

If you're prepping for the possibility of a break down in the middle of nowhere, the weight of a bunch of unnecessary items will quickly bog you down unless you're in good shape. Stick with the basics and you're more likely to hump your way out without leaving a bunch of stuff behind.

I'm not trying to pooh pooh on what anyone's idea of planning and maintaining a quick reaction plan with supplies should be, but I do suggest that folks think through a few realistic scenarios that could immediately affect you and start there first. I've built up and torn down plenty of QRB/BOBs after realizing most of the stuff I had in them was a waste of weight and space.

What do you store all that kit in?

Ha ha- yeah it is quite the kit and takes up a LOT of room. Hence the comment about the wife being cool.

A few things I do to maximize my space:

1) anything that can be vacuum sealed and compressed to a smaller size like clothing TP and anything soft. Cuts down on about 1/2 the room it takes up.

2) If you played Tetris as a young boy or girl you have the skills to pack tons of shit into multiple bags and into the truck.

3) anything hollow gets items stuffed inside.

4) use the ceiling and sides of the interior of vehicle to mount larger tools and items that are permanently in the truck.

5) there are lots of crevices in my T4R I can stuff things in- like the left side jack/tool panel in my '08.

6) the wife is cool with and takes part in our survival preps- this is key!

I built a floor vault with foam cutout padding for the DD MK18, ammo and the body armor. Complete with rechargeable dessicant- vault is air /water tight.

Then I pack everything into a mix of maxpedition, camel back, Voodoo tactical and go ruck bags- I tighten/make them smaller with straps around the outside and stack those tightly together.

Mounted holsters for pistols and double mag pouches on front driver and passenger seats in between seat cushion and center console.

Some other stuff is in the glove box, rear compartments, I also stuff a few things under the rear seats.

I can fit the entire kit I listed above with rear seats available and rear window is not obstructed.

I also have some additional gear packed up and ready to go in case of a major breakdown and need to bug out for a long time. I keep it all together in the shed next to my truck- I can throw it all in the truck I a matter of minutes and get the f out quick if need be.

I also stashed a few bags at different places on my property hidden for long term in case I need to get out real quick and may be able to come back later down the road. That way it won't likely get taken by others.

Hope I never have to use any of it in extremis- but am ready if I do.

We still do dry runs of bugging in and bugging out. Practice once a quarter so we are sharp and ready if it happens.

I cannot stress training and mindset enough. A well trained individual with the proper mindset that only has a knife and some rope would out last the most geared up goober/tactical Timmy that doesn't have the proper mindset and has trained very little.

Stay in shape and eat well.

I too have changed my kit a lot over the years and agree with you. I am admittedly a bit heavy.

I do however keep my 72 hour bag stocked with the essentials so I can just take that and a rifle and a plate carrier and go if need be.

The best way to get started with preps is to research local events and disasters and prep for those as they are most likely.

The reason I'm heavy on gear at all times is I've been reading the writing on the wall for quite some time now and is extremely unpleasant at best.

The free shit army will riot across the nation once their free shit valve is turned off.

If we get any type of disruption in the food supply chain, potable water supply or electrical grid- it's going make mad max look like a tea party.

All the entitled pieces of shit who do nothing but collect others hard earned money to survive, gangbangers, criminal opportunists and derka derka's will cause chaos like we haven't seen before. Our government is creating a nightmare scenario that could unfold at any moment. Powder keg is bursting at the seams already- it just takes a spark...

Yep. Great book and pretty spot on regarding the chaos that would happen after a major event.

Everyone should read it!

Indeed- proficient shooting/skills are perishable. Only way to retain is train train train!

And not just training in a static range. Get out and move around, do drills and use moving targets.

You may be a crack shot on a one way range with static targets- but when you add the stress of the real world things change.

Get yourself into a good handgun and carbine course- make sure you get a good teacher- lots of fudds out there recycling bad training.

The wife and I try to do one handgun course and one carbine course a year and go to the range at least once a month.

Got a chance to do simunitions in a shoot house and it really opened my eyes and I learned a LOT!!!
