Emergency Preparedness & your EDC bag

Storing necessary supplies in a separate cargo box (some of the bed safes are pretty nice) can help with bringing along larger items, but the purpose of a go-bag/EDC is to have something on you that you can grab in a hurry and take with you when all you have is your feet to carry you.

This is why weight considerations need to be taken seriously as too much gear can weigh you down, affecting your ability to either bug out or be rescued successfully depending on your situation.

After the storms this weekend, I have revised my bag to also include one change of clothes. There's too many pictures/videos of people wandering around the rubble in whatever they had on when the storms hit. I aint going out in my underwear like that!

I'm not saying what you're wanting to do is a bad idea, but it moves away from the spirit of having an emergency prepardness option.

I agree- that is why having multiple bags is the best option. Each one can be purpose packed so you know which one(s) to grab and go with in case you need to transition from automobile to foot travel.

I personally like having a lot of gear knowing I may have to ditch some to lighten the load and GTFO.

I have some other odds and ends that I can't think of- but that is pretty much it. Glad my wife is cool and likes guns, knives and survival almost as much as I do. Truck is always loaded up and ready.

Some things I recommend:

1) USE YOUR GEAR! Try it out, see what works and what doesn't. TEST THAT SHIT! Can you carry that ruck sack you filled with stuff for 10 miles? Does that fire starter actually work or will it shit the bed when needed? Is your knife robust enough to do what you need it to and last?

2) Solar blankets suck at keeping you warm unless you have another outer blanket to insulate your from cold ground or a cold car seat. Solar blankets on there own suck- get a wool blanket.

3) Make sure you have a deck of cards or some form of entertainment- if you've ever really been stuck or in a rough situation- it helps to keep your mind from focusing on the negative aspects of your situation and have a way to escape for a moment.

4) Don't rely on your phone for maps, navigation, etc. Get a map of your state and a compass. Learn how to navigate.

5) Have a realistic plan for whatever situation you may find yourself in. Being a few minutes ahead of the pack if you need to bug out in an urban or suburban environment will be the difference between getting out and getting stuck with the masses. Have a plan to ditch the vehicle and go on foot if need be.

6) Don't skimp on survival gear, guns, knives, tools, etc. BUY ONCE AND CRY ONCE! If its cheap it's not a survival tool- it's future trash.

AND the 2 MOST important of all: MINDSET and TRAINING!

Having all these tools is worth basically nothing if you don't know how to use them and have the proper mindset to use them and survive. Especially weapons.

Most people in rough situations die because they give up- not because they couldn't go on- but simply because they are not mentally hardened to cope with a tough situation and they just give up.

Get your mindset squared away and really think about decisions you may have to make and how you will find strength to survive in rough spots.

Keep your heads on a swivel gents. Situational awareness.

There will be some sort of terror event here in the USA soon. With all the derka derka 'fugees coming from the Middle East and the homegrown derka derka nuts- it is just a matter of time. Malls, stadiums, religious events/gatherings, concert halls, etc- are all soft targets with a lot of sheep- the wolves know this.

Our gummint is not going to be able to help or save you, local LEO's are not going to be able to help or save you- YOU are the only line of defense you have when shit goes sideways- be prepared to react if the time comes.

Stay safe and keep training!

I posted this on 11/20 and the San Bernadino attack happened on 12/2.

Guys & Gals posting in this thread may not need to hear this as most appear to have their heads on and eyes open- but please talk to your friends and family about this.

More attacks are coming. Our Government is importing the terror on purpose. That statement may seem a little Tin-Foily Conspiracy for a lot of you-but it is the truth.

I work with a lot of Military and Law Enforcement and most all of them can see the writing on the wall and have warned that things are not going to get better until they get worse and more of our population wakes up to the reality of the de facto invasion of Jihads under the guise of fugee's.

Ask yourself why Christian refugees are being refused and only Muslim "refugees" are being allowed in. Ask yourself why our "vetting" process is so weak. Especially considering records in that part of the world are CRAP.

Look at what the Traitor in the White House is saying and doing. Question what the propaganda wing of the Governemtn- whoops I mean MEDIA is saying and doing,

Do some historical research on Islam. Read the Koran (Both the Meccan & Medinan) and the sira and hadith to understand what these folks are up to.

Go look at the photos showing known terrorists training in the ME and then new photos of them entering our country and European countries.

Contact you "representatives" and tell them to stop imigration from known terrorist countries and countries known to support them until we can get a REAL vetting process worked up and push for PRO-GUN laws and never give in, double and tripple down on all PRO GUN and PRO self defense laws.

Get your ass to the range and take training courses taught by REAL professionals like Larry Vikers, Mike Panone, Pat McNamarra, Jason Falla, Etc.

Situational awareness is KEY!

Don't be afraid to Profile due to the Political Correct bullshit. **** political correctness.

Be aware that AQ & IS and other terror groups change tactics and evolve quickly- these folks are no longer waging their Jihad in a 3GW fashion- 4GW & 5GW is here and it is hard to combat without acknowledging it and knowing how to evolve your own tactics to fight it effectively. Use your OODA Loop.

Stay safe and keep your eyes open and heads on a swivel gents.

Not to add fuel to the thread derailment, but the US has only partial involvement with who applies for refugee status. The United Nations controls refugee applications and processes who goes where.

Christians and other non-Muslim peoples in countries like Syria often do not register as refugees for fear of persecution in a country that is predominantly Muslim. There HAVE been Christian refugees brought in, but they are only a small percentage of the overall population so far.

I'm not an Obama lover, but I also don't like it when people spread FUD without checking their facts first.

When 4,200+ Muslims have been allowed asylum and only 727 Christians have been allowed Asylum- something is wrong. Christians make up less of the population over there- yes; however they are persecuted MUCh more than Muslims in their own lands. Christians who immigrate here also assimilate in greater numbers than Muslims.

How come Christian Asylum seekers with FAMILY in the USA willing to sponsor and take them in to their own homes without government assistance are being denied? While muslims with no ties to this country are pouring in having 100% Govt. assistnace. That's some odd shit.

I didn't mean to imply ALL Christians were being denied- but it is obvious by the direct actions of our Govt that they are being denied at a higher rate. There is some bias going on.

And not because their vetting process turned out negative. Some were because mistakes were made on official forms (Muslims made similar mistakes and were allowed in). Their is something stinky going on.

Christians in the ME region are being beheaded, raped and murdered at a MUCH higher rate than Muslims- they need out way more than Islamists do.

Here is my current sent up. The two separate bags in the left drawer. Olive bag for food, water, shelter, survival bag. And a medical gear bag full of everything I would need for myself and the dog. 5-day supply of food water(with several ways to purify water) if I have to leave the rig, but if I can stay with the rig, easily a 7-10 supply If I can stay with it.

I'll post up more details for each bag if someone asks.

Love the set up and the box love to see box build pics if you have them slap them up too!

Aodhan, that's a nice set up you've built! I like the way everything sits in it's own section and you seem to have more room to spare. Everything is within easy reach.

Wouldn't it be safer to have 1/3 of each bag in each bag?

Not slamming, just trying to learn.

Thanks

No worries! I had originally divided the supplies between the two bags, but ended up separating them again, as I find myself needing to grab all the first aid stuff in one go more frequently then I care to admit.

Nice organization.

I'm new to this forum but in my spare time I run a site that specializes in gear reviews. As a result, I tend to accumulate a crap load of kit. Just put a deposit down on a Trail Premium so I'm going to have to figure out something like this once I settle in with the vehicle.

Spent 8 hours on the PA Turnpike Friday night right after I bought my 2002 Limited. Just made it home (finally) and the first thing I did was re-pack an emergency bag: rations, blanket, bottled water, tools/flares, etc. Glad I was prepared earlier. Silver lining? She ran like a champ. I'm in love.

You never know what you might need until you need it, that's for sure.

Getting a bag together is one thing, but testing your load out in simulated conditions before the real thing hits is another. Too many people build bags with crap they never test, putting them at risk of a component failure, poor organization/accessibility or just a waste of space for stuff they don't need.

I'm all for trunk safes and storage compartments in the back, but what happens if you get rear ended and the back is smashed all to hell? Do you have an immediate access option sitting somewhere within reach as well?

One other tip is to make sure that the folks you roll with know where your gear is and how to use it. Just because you packed it doesn't mean you'll always be the one to use it!

want good free training volunteer for your local FEMA C.E.R.T. you get basic triage training, rescue/self rescue. And if you stay active you get access to even more training.

Neat thread. I really like what everyone else has! I have kept a small Action Packer in the back of my 97 for the last 4 or 5 years. It's mainly geared for surviving in the high country of Colorado (in any season) if I get stranded, but I suppose that's not too different than EDC stuff.

It has;
-Spare MSR Pocket Rocket stove with fuel canisters and some pots/pans
-Larger first aid kit
-Cold weather gear and space blankets
-Extra quart of oil
-5 or 6 Backpacker's Pantry meals
-Chlorine Diox tabs
-Batteries and CREE LED type flashlights
-Jumper cables
-Solar panel
-TP (duh)
-Fire starters and what not

Next to it is a full tool kit, tire iron, Sven Saw, avy or dirt shovel depending on the season, and the hi-lift jack comes along when I'm really going out. I keep it all lashed down with a nice ratcheting webbing strap so it doesn't slide all over my backseat. I have all of the lose stuff (tool kit, tire iron, etc.) wedged in between the Action Packer and the wheel well.

I occasionally use things from it now and again, and that spare roll of TP has saved my ass quite a few times (hahaha). I've always wondered about the gas canisters sitting in my black car in the middle of really hot Denver days, but nothing has exploded yet!

I'll probably add some ammo to that since I've gotten into firearms in the last couple years. I hear it's quite stable even if it's in a hot car, and that it's the moisture that might kill it.

A cool, dry place with a fairly constant temp. is ideal. Pentrating oils (WD40, etc.), lubricants, moisture, etc.. can make the powder inert and lead to malfunctions. Try rotating out the extra ammo you have in your vehicle every month as well as what you have in your magazine (s). Shoot the old and replace with fresh. Not because you have to, but because it is a good way to remind yourself you need to train with your firearm regularly.

Thanks for the info!

Also, you forgot the other compelling reason to shoot with the old ammo...because of that pesky expiration date I keep telling the better half about. =p Just kidding. I'd hate to see her hesitate reloading a mag in a bad situation because she wasn't sure where the expiration date was.
