don't you just need a Farday cage? should be pretty easy to rig something up. wrapping everything in heavy duty tin foil should actually work.
I can't even image how your going to test it to see if it work? without a test you will never really know.
you would probably have to wrap all the wires in a type of conductive material to isolate it. not sure it's really possible to do that retroactively?

So what are all the computers on a 98 runner? Having an extra set aside wouldnt hurt. The suns activity is never predicted, its another Carrington Event thats on my mind.

Thinking you just need to swap out the engine and tranny for an old V6 that uses a vacuum advanced distributor with points, manual tranny. And maybe keep a spare coil and condenser though you’d probably not need them.
Get rid of the computers, go with a starter solenoid wired to the ignition, manual speedo, ect...
Maybe you’d loose the tach? Not important.
Would be easier to start with a 60’s or older rig.
On the 3rd gen you have several circuit cards, (igniter, abs, 4wd, gauge cluster, ecm), ect...

Without getting into details, remember EMP does damage to integrated circuits by electrons trying to get to ground the fastest. Presumably your vehicle is sitting on a mix of relatively nonconducting rubber. Electrons will find something else more attractive to bond to...
It is a safe assumption if ICs inside an isolated vehicle get fried, you will have much more substantive issues (alpha, beta and gamma) to deal with if the cause was a nuclear detonation. In other words, you may not have enough time to use a full tank of gas if you are that close.
As a yardstick, if a majority of your EMP knowledge comes from (1) movies or (2) fiction books, you are doing it wrong.

One thing people seem to forget, in a real survival situation ur going 2 c the animal side in humans come out, if u have a running vehicle and no one else does u better make sure ur 4runner is bulletproof...

My 22r rigs used an ignition controll module. Fairly expensive and would sometimes fail.

Load firearms and ammunition. Guns are one of the first things vandals look for, and I don’t want ours getting into the wrong hands. In a worst-case scenario, we may need them for defense. If our family is bugging out, hundreds or even thousands of people will be doing the same thing, and they may not all be law-abiding citizens.

EMP for which source is the question. Also any semiconductor will burn out a surge. Would be a major project in any modern vehicle due to a the semiconductor electrics in the vehicle.
If the EMP surge is high enough. Nothing you shield will be protected.
Except in faraday cages and old microwaves. Storage underground and turning metal buildings into cages as well.

I had two 20' cargo containers at our old rural home. I was able to source them new (one-trippers) from $2,500 to $4,000. Really nice. One would be fantastic for this purpose...
Not the best shots, but a couple photos I found for one.
I really wanted to move one to our new home, but didn't want to deal with any legalities and complaints...
I will construct a carport at some point, corrugated metal roof, and maybe something can be done with that structure. As I recall, the orientation of the vehicle can be a factor with respect to the impact of an EMP. I'd have to read-up to make sure that's correct.
For household items, don't toss old metal file cabinets. Got one off CL years ago for 5 or 10 bucks. They make great Faraday cages (FC) for portable items like radios (normal, FRS, ham, etc), flashlights, computers, tablets, phones, etc...
Back to the 4Runner, another approach... Identify the parts or components apt to fail in such an event and have an extra set of those in the FC too.

So you’re trying to stop a super high, short over voltage in your electrical system and you need somewhere for that electricity to go. I’m sure with enough looking you may or may not stumble on an expansive study by DOE on the subject, and may uncover scientifically proven methods to protect from EMPs.
Lot of snake oil stuff out there and on here so beware. A shipping container might work well if it’s earth grounded and covered with dirt. I also think someone shared a link to basically a giant surge protector for vehicles. This work....in theory.
Now to reality. If it gives you comfort knowing you’ve protected your 4runner that is great. Unfortunately a nuclear EMP attack would surely mean MAD is in full swing. The aftermath, if you aren’t blind, vaporized, have your skin burned off or are most likely dying from radiation poisoning will be more terrible than you can imagine. We are a society who can’t even shelter in place for any length of time without crying about it. The ill prepared, petty and uninformed will be the first to go. That’s the harsh reality.
