i have gone in to hi 4 alot... but it seems like when i go into lo 4 i allways grind gears.... i have gone into it once or twice but allways forget.... how do u do it exactly?
engage into lo4?

Yeah, as stated above, stop and shift into neutral, then 4lo. That is on an auto of course. On my manual I simply would stop and engage the clutch, the same thing more or less I suppose. With the 5 speed Toyota states that you can shift into 4lo by depressing the clutch and going less then 5mph. Anytime I tried to go into 4lo while moving at all it would grind, so I always just stopped. On my 02 I stop hit neutral, push it into 4 lo then drive, it has never ground for me doing this. I had never owned an auto, had 4 5speed Toy 4x4's, first time I went to 4lo in the 02 I left it in D and stopped, I had to push the lever pretty hard but it did finally pop into 4lo. Then I took out the manual and read it, after trying the proper technique I realized this was the better way.

also, i have looked at other t4r with 4WD, and i havent seen one that looks like mine. on my 4WD shifter, it has 2HI/4HI, 4HI/L, N, and 4LO. and it goes in a U shape. every other one i have seen doesnt have the 4HI/L..and also just goes in a straight line. what is yours like?

ok... with some confusing answers i just went out and messed with it for a few min...
1. while driving slowly engage HI4
2. STOP, (while foot on break shift tranny into N)
3. manually move Xcase lever to N
4. put tranny into park
5.whait a few seconds.

well for me i do or else the engine keeps some geers turning and it would grind.... but i will try it on my way to school

wow, thanks guys. this really helps me out. im going to try to shift into 4LO this weekend when i have time. also, does anyone know when toyota started making the electronicly shifting 4WD, the one that shifts in a straight line? and also, when i shift into 4LO, is it true that i have to be driving in a straight line? and does it have to be while i am driving forward? because sometimes my 4HI wont engage, and so i drive in reverse for a little bit and then forward again, and it engages just fine. thanks in advance guys.

If your 4HI won't engage, just rev up the engine a bit while turning the steering wheel lock to lock. The system is run on vaccuum, so revving the engine helps.
Also, I don't know what you mean by driving in a straight line? You shouldn't be moving if you're switching to 4LO. And when you're in 4LO, you shouldn't be on pavement--only off-road/snow/mud. But in 4HI, you can engage that anywhere (since you've got an AWD system).
