Engaging the 4WD system

The pop might be from him applying power before the truck is actually in 4wd. After you shift into 4wd the light will blink until it actually goes into 4wd then the light is solid. You should not apply the gas/power until the 4wd light is solid. This also applies while disengaging 4wd

Good discussion guys. Thank you. I think the answer is that when shifting back into 2wd, I am physically shifting the transfer case into 2wd, butthe ADD lags because of some binding then pops out. That makes sense.

To address the power on/off before shifting into/out of 4WD, how is that possible? The system is designed to shift into 4WD on the fly. I fact, isn’t it required to have the wheels turning when shifting from 2WD to 4WD to help align the dogs?

It's an actual physical link to the transfer case. It vibrates and moves while driving and you can feel resistance when shifting. I don't know what pop he's describing, though.

I thought the physical link was for the low range and the high range was just an electrical switch with a fake "lever actuation" action.

Moving doesn't mean power, just don't try to shift while giving it a bunch of skinny pedal

I think both are physical. I can feel resistance when shifting into 4 HI.
They are as far as the t-case is concerned but there is still an electrical function to lock in the front axle. Kind of like the vacuum disconnect in an old YJ. That is where the delay sometimes comes in. At least that is my understanding.

Light Indicator

Hi, hope someone sees this... I have had many 4th gen and buying my first (used) 5th gen. When I switched from H2H to H4H, what color should the light be?
The 4th gen would blink amber then turn green when engaged. This one stays stays a solid amber but it does drive like in 4wd.

Is this broken, or working as designed.

Amber? Do you mean green? When it is flashing (green), it is attempting to engage ADD (automatic differential disconnect of the front), and possibly the transfer case if it is electrically shifted (no lever). Once the ADD / electronics know the system is engaged, then the light will stop flashing and will turn solid (green). If everything lines up perfectly, then it will sometimes just go straight to solid and skip the flashing.
