First 4wd Owner question...

Hello Enthusiasts,

This might come off as a dumb question...I've tried to look at the owners manual and understand it all, but I think I might just be dumb at this point

So, I bought a 2024 TRD Off-Road Premium. It's my first ever 4wd vehicle (besides an AWD) and I'm confused on the 4wd "shifter" for the TRD ORP

The previous owner had it in the N position all the time as she never used the 4wd but once. Using the manual, it doesn't really say which position you should use to just drive it normally on paved roads, I know H2 is sort of used for that but am I supposed to keep it there all the time during normal commutes? Or is leaving it in the N position also okay for normal commuting?

I call BS on previous owner leaving it in N all the time as that is literally neutral and would not drive at all. It should normally be in 2H all the time except when 4wd is needed. 4h for normal fire roads etc and 4lo for rock crawling.

I can assure you the previous owner did not drive around with the transfer case in neutral.

Regardless, I recommend taking a look at the manual first and then actually trying all of the drive modes.

You can easily test what happens if you go out and put the transfer case in neutral and then try to drive or reverse ��

You can damage the 4WD system by putting it in the wrong settings.
At minimum you need to watch you tubes immediately. H2 is all you need for months of driving on pavement wet or dry.
H4 is only for dirt, snow, sand etc.
You need to learn about how to safely exercise the H4 and Lo4. This should be performed to prevent expensive stuck/frozen actuators in the 4WD system.
Also lots of lube needed under vehicle as well as normal under hood fluids and lubes.
