Engine a real slouch

I bought a 91 4Runner v6 (3vze) 4x4 with 55,000 miles for $1,000 because it needed a new water pump and timing belt (I set the crank shaft timing on the 0 when i replaced the belt and the cams on their hash marks, is that right?). I hadend driven it before changing the timing belt so i dont know if thats the problem, the idle sometimes is rough and now it ihas just recently been hard to start. I bought a new fuel filter the other day and haven't been able to get it installed yet because the fuel lines are sorta rusted into the old filter and wont back out. So, I have two questions 1.What else could the problem be? 2. What is the easiest way to remove the old fuel filter?

Ya my truck only has 55,000 on it. I finally got one side of the line off and I am letting it drain before i do the other side. Thanks for your help.:)

I finally got the new fuel filter in, it seemed to help quite a bit but it still dosent like going up hills. Could it be the injectors are clogged? Is there any fuel injector cleaner you would recommend? Thanx.

as i posted in another thread, have you checked the spark plug lines? to check them, in a really dark location, lift the hood and look for any arcing on the plug wires. could be under load your having more leakage and losing spark.

could also be the spark plugs. if they are copper, the recommended replacement is at 30k miles, if plat spark plugs at 60-100k, but typically at 60k.

and if the injectors are clogged, you could try running some higher octane gas, or run some octane boost before taking it in for injector cleaning.

just some thoughts.
