Ditto with the scope, bent valves... not good

The battery still confounds me. Has nothing to do with the timing... probably another problem there... You should have gotten a warning light on the dash for the battery/alternator problem.

Sounds like you will be doing a top end repair, minimum. Just hope that the valves didn't damage the pistons. Only way to know is pull the heads. If the pistons show damage, it might be more economical to look for another engine. Rebuilds can get expensive. Also, make sure they replace the timing belt pulleys and idlers when they put it back together. I'm sure a decent shop will know all this. Good luck.
