engine chattering noise please help

Hello,

I just got 95 SR5 4runner 3.0 4x4 when I accelerate my valve for something in the left engine side is chattering. I did check my oil level and is full. Can some one please let me know it some things wrong with my engine or it normal with that model?

I did search if is valve then i have to do some adjustment? how much? don't want to deal with dealer.

Yes, if you hear ticking from your top end then you should adjust your valves. It is a fairly simple procedure that pretty much anyone can do with a good manual or an internet search. Avoid the dealership for this one for sure.

Hmm...I dont think you should be so quick to take the top of your engine apart.I have a very noticeable ticking sound coming from the top of my engine as well,and yes it is the valves,but the mechanic i always deal with (more expensive but very reliable,always gets fixed first time) says its normal for the toyaota engines,he told me its even noticeable in his wife new fj,just not as loud. just my 2 cents

Ticking is sometimes a sign of a stuck lifter.

For me, I won't hesistate to remove a valve cover to at least check the clearance on my valves if they are being noisy. The last thing I want is self inflicted problems from a lack of simple maintenance. I'm not saying that the valve is just loose, there could be other issues there but always, always check the simple stuff first.

Do you notice any difference in how the engine runs? the fuel injectors make a pronounced ticking noise, thats probably all it is.

While valves are easy to adjust on the old 22RE engine -- not so for the V6 3L. It uses Toyota specific shims and a special tool - so unless you have an assortment of shims in hand and the tool you'll end up at the dealer. I'd use a bottle of top end lubricant to free possible sticky lifters and a bottle of Chevron Techron FI cleaner for the injectors before I'd pay rather big $ to dealer to adjust valves on a 15 year old engine (unless engine has been rebuilt in last 5 years).

How many miles on the engine? Combine the valve adjustment with getting the timing belt and water pump changed. When was that last done? Much as we like to think Yota's last forever they do require periodic maintenace - before they fail hard and leave you stranded.

Id put money on it being the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Fairly common noise from what I understand.

It sits on the top of the engine, its a kinda round looking thing.

If you leave your car idling and listen for the noise with the hood up you should be able to locate approx where its coming from. Touch a few things with your finger to be certain where the noise is coming from and if its the FPR you will be able to feel the ticking noise through your finger tips.

Supposedly these things can tick forever and still not cause problems?!? Mines been doing it for almost 12 months now without having to replace it.

My 4runner has 120k, and i just did the timing belt and all the belt, oil change adding BG MOA, tuned up, 2 cans of BG 44K, but the noise is still there. It louder when I hit the gas pedal. No money for valve adjustment.

I just got the 4runner didn't know the history. I just don't want to drive it anymore because of that noise. I think I put it on craigslist soon.

How much should I list my 4runner?

I've got a noise like that, and I think it's an exhaust issue (22RE)... It's a toyota, if it doesn't kill it, it'll only make it stronger. :hatsoff:

120k is low mileage for a '95. So if clean and rust free it has value -- until they hear the ticking time bomb (if indeed its that loud). You'd probably benefit from dealer assessment vice blind/deaf internet evaluation. They might say its normal or a simple valve adjustment. $150 spent on further repairs might net you extra $1k on sale -- or you'd decide to keep it. Look value up in Edmunds/Kelley Blue book - and expect to get just private party price less estimated cost of perhaps engine rebuild (a big number there!) if indeed a time bomb.
