Engine Dogging out, Help please!

Yesterday I was driving my 99 4 runner and was going about 40 mph and pushed the gas peddle about 1/4 to 1/2 way down (normal acceleration) and the engine starting to shake. ALmost like it was not getting enough fuel or something.

At first I thought it was the tranny but now I have noticed it will happen just about anytime provided I have the RPM's right around 2000...

If I continue to push the pedal it recovers and accel's fine. Or let off its fine too.

Does this sound like a problem anyone else might have?

Didn't know if there is a fuel filter on these. thought maybe that was it? Or some polution control crap?

Any ideas I can try anyone?

No Check Engine Lights?

I had similar symptoms when my spark plug wires decayed. They were arcing between each other causing cylinders to misfire. The "shake" would occasionally happen during idle but it was very obvious during acceleration.

Nope

not one check engine light but a definate issue.

its not TERRIBLY serious right now but i'm worried it could and will get worse.

I suppose maybe i'll call the dealer..

Anyone else have a suggestion?

I am also having the same/simliar problem with my 1998SR5 w/96,000 miles.

I have changed the fuel filter (easy) and clean my K&N FIPK, plus dropped Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase and fuel tank, in addition switched to premium gas.

There was a noticeable difference, but I think the Marvel Mystery oil helped the most. There is now just a slight hesitation on the highway.

It may be fuel injectors are clogged?

Oh, I also took off my FIPK and cleaned the throttle body out with throttle body cleaner from Autozone.

Good luck...I'm still trying to figure out was is causing it.

I don't have anyone close by who has MMO on the shelf.

I did get some fuel injector cleaner and also some Gas treatment.

My fuel take was low. below a quarter tank. that MIGHT be the problem.

I'm not sure.

Do you think I should try some premium gas.

like 5 gal worth and put in those two items? will the premium gas make any difference?

Just wanted to let everyone know

i put in the injector cleaner and have run about 40 miles so far and no change.

the jerk occurs at RPM of about 1600 and 58 MPH

always occurs right around where a gear switch should happen. If i depress pedal further and the gear switches the issue goes away.

I have all this documented for the dealer. have an appt on thursday.

I may need new plugs since to my knowledge they have not been changed.

one other thing I have noticed. when I checked the auto tranny fluid when cold it was filled up to the hot line. I didn't know if that would matter or not. but the dealer did that the last time.

I'm thinking it's the fuel filter needing some replacement but maybe that's not the case.

I'd check the fuel filter, plugs and finally just check all the fluids (esp the tranny and gears if you haven't changed em already).

Also check your air filter as that may be dirty(? - long shot).

Hope they find the culprit..

My vote goes for ignition problems, especially based on what you've done to date. I particularly would suspect the spark plug wires, as one post has already suggested, and of course the spark plugs themselves. Did you say how many miles you've gone?

Hi all

the wires are original. 99.

the plugs i am not positive but I think around 25000.

Its at the dealer for diagnostics today. I was going to do plugs and wires myself but I thought if its something else I might as well just let them find the issue.

Plus they adjusted my rear brakes improperly the last time it was in for inspection and they are gonna correct that for me since they screwed up the first time.

i'll let everyone know what they find.

Just wanted to let everyone know.

The Dealer called and the plugs are bad. One cylinder was not firing at all. So they are replacing both the plugs and the wires. I'm not too upset about it really.

The brakes were a bit more serious with new rear shoes needed and they recommended the front rotors to have a quick turn as well.

Oh well. I'm glad it really wasn't too serious. Thanks for all the input. Next time I need plugs maybe i'll change them myself! Surely i'll still have my 4runner. whats another 100,000.
