Engine fan

I was wondering if anyone had a trick to stop the fan from turning when trying to remove the 4 nuts holding the fan and clutch assy. on the water pump trying to get at the tensioner pulley assy to replace.. I've been wracking my brain trying to think of way to do this but I am stumped didn't have as much of a problem with my 92.

Two wrenches help sometimes, but it can be a bit of a hassle to do. The best way is to get a fan clutch tool that's designed to hold it.

Short of having fancy tools you can buy a cheap strap wrench from Harbor Freight or wedge a narrow long screwdriver between the bolt heads. Obviously the tool blackworks shows is the optimal way, but unless you want to spend $50 on a tool you may use once it may price you out of it.

i have not done it on the 4runner but on my crown vic i used a screw driver between a stud on one side and the center shaft to hold it still

Thanx for the ideas guys I think I have some strap wrenches around here from work I will give those a try..
