Engine Governor?

Is there a way of installing some kind of governor in the throttle linkage or software program to reduce the acceleration of the engine and reduce the top speed of the car?

I want to set one of these 4Rs up for my wife. We have heavy rains here, and my wife doesn't seem to adjust her driving habits when the storms come.

Lmao. My wife would kill me if I tried this. Good luck. On side note reducing power or throttle on such an under powered vehicle already is dangerous.

LOL that's a new one. There is no governor. The computer controls all that. Although, most of us tighten up the throttle linkage to get better response I guess you could loosen it so the truck would be more sluggish.

You could just get full coverage and a big life insurance policy on her. Or you could adjust the throttle cable.

Or maybe buy her a bus pass?

If an underpowered 2WD SUV is too fast for her, I'd hate to see the carnage that would ensue if she was behind the wheel of a vehicle that's actually fast.

Try to go above 105 and see what happens.

The truck won't let you go any faster than that. It stops throttle response, puts the transmission into neutral until you get under 100.

Ask me how I know.

Really? I've been above 100 in my older 97. My current one hasn't been past 85 though.

OP - Have your wife drive a lower to the ground car for a week and the 4Runner will feel like your doing x4 the speed at 50mph =)

On my 99 Limited it does.

My 2.4 '99 Tacoma did the same thing.

Funny thing is, the engine is only at ~3700, so she'll go faster.

I am not doubting you - based on our truck I just eanna know how long you had to floor it toeven get it to 90 !

I accepted the 4Runner was slow a long time ago - I guess the 94 Land Cruiser helped with that and ours may have seen 80 on a good day.
Maybe one day I will experiment.

The 3rd gen is already slow, reliable but slow.

Reducing the acceleration won't really do much even in heavy rain -- you can barely do a burnout in these at 100% throttle in pouring rain LOL. Now if shes going 80 mph on the highway with water pooling up and hydroplanes that is a different story.

I'm guessing loosen the throttle cable? I adjusted mine, and it stretched again a few months later. There's even slop in the gas pedal now too. I'm amazed at how slow it is now. A new throttle cable in in the works for me soon, so maybe I'll just give you my old stretched one. It really makes it feel like you lost 30 hp.

It's true. About 105-110 it cuts out. Those of us who are supercharged are more aware of the governor...

But for the OP, it sounds like the issue is not the vehicle but the driver. Best I can say is put some tires on it that handle very well in the rain on pavement and make sure the brakes are good.

You know, she could injure or kill herself just as easily at 55 mph as she could at 85 mph. If she doesn't have the common sense to slow down in adverse conditions, it sounds like she's in line for a Darwin Award.

Hate to be so blunt, but if she doesn't care for her safety, the safety of anyone driving with her, or anyone on the road around her, she shouldn't be behind the wheel. I'm a firefighter and go to plenty of accidents and know most of them could have been prevented if the people knew how to drive and/or weren't distracted with whatever (cell phones, kids, applying make-up, eating, etc.)

If you value the 4runner, I'd buy her a big beater car and let her wreck that.

But it is the vehicle, in this sense: If there is nothing that can be done with behavior, she'd be safer in a large modern car, NOT in a truck, even a mini-truck like the 4Runner. The rest of us would, of course, be safer if you put her in a tiny, lightweight, gutless auto-trans minicar, like a Yaris or one of those newer sub-mini Fiats maybe.
By the way, since I come to my V6 4Runner after a long line of slow and/or underpowered cars/small trucks, I can attest to the fact that the V6 3rd gen 4Runner is not underpowered, but merely adequately powered. To those of you who came to the 4Runner from high performing sedans and V-10 trucks, it may seem underpowered.

Naturall aspirated 97 5 speed.....definitely a governor at 110 mph. Hit it once going down hill.

I think The best solution will be weld like 2in long (You have to set length to speed You expect) bolt under accelerator pedal. No way she go faster

If rain is in the forecast, slap in some sort of restrictor plate into the airbox.
