Engine Idle

Im a new owner of an 86' 4runner. The truck's been amazing but very often on a long trip the engine idle gets way out of whack. What can I do to fix this problem? She's runnning a 22RE 157k original miles. DW-40 worked the first few times but now I dont know what to do.

Thats the same problem I had, but mine was all the time. Idle jumped waaaay up.

After changing bunches of things, I just turned down the idle screw.

Problem solved.

Not really sure what your problem is, though.

I turned the Air Idle Controll Valve screw a little bit. Im not sure how far it needs to go. Do I just keep turning until the engine idle reduces or do I turn just a hair at a time until the problem is solved?

Be sure to mark down how many turns you do...just in case that is not the actual problem so you can put it back where it was.

I just kept turning until I got back to around 700 rpm at normal op. temp idle.

I followed all the regular trouble shooting I could find on here & Yota Tech, and the only thing that brought my idle down from 1500 rpm was turning the set screw down.

Wish I read that before I started turning it. haha. But thank you for the info I will do that next time. I only turned it about 1/4 of a turn. Don't know if that will effect anything or not. I took a look at the engine and the accelerator spring is worn so its not pulling the accelerator back to a normal idle. The accelerator cable looks new and everything else on the throttle body looks fine. I think its that spring. So I tried to replace it with new springs and they worked for 5 mins or so until they too warped. Should I just order a new factory spring instead of universal ones like I tried today?
