here is the problem, my 2000 3.4 4runner run good after it sits over night and drive to work, but if I go to the store and shut it off or drive it for a while it will start missing, could this be a coil going bad or something else, any help would be wonderful, thanks

I have been experiencing the same thing on my 99 3.4L w/ 164K miles.

Cold start is fine, hot start is fine, BUT after it cools down about 5-10 min, I will get horrible missing and stutter. Engine codes include p0171 (lean) and p0300/301/304 (misfires).

Still occurs even after these changes done so far:
- new OEM plugs/wires/coils (yes, all 3)
- new PCV valve
- cleaned MAF

Next things to check when I find the time:
- injectors
- fuel pump
- compression test
- leak-down test

Also the engine seems to be running hot, so I've also ordered a thermostat and fan clutch to address a potential cooling issue. Wouldn't be surprised if I need to replace the radiator as well.

dead cylinder

it will sometimes come out of the engine miss, thats why I wonder if its not a coil miss firing after it haets up

Yours sounds like the early stages of what mine is going through. Several months ago, it would occassionally 'recover' and run fine after warming back up, or pulling over and restarting the engine.

But lately it has not even been recovering and continues to stutter, all the way home, even after the changes described above.

what is the coolan level like? is it low?

it might be a headgasket leaking into the cylinder.
you could try leaving the rad cap loose. that will keep from pressurizing the system, and IF thats the problem, it would atleast slow down the leak.

HG is a possibility as well. Coolant level looked ok last time I checked.

brianbu, what's the history of your rig?

I did have it checked at a parts dealer and it read a dead cylinder on #3, the oil and antifreeze are good and never runs hot, the last time it did this about 6 months ago I replaced the plugs and wires and it ran good, this time it didn't fix the problem, that why I'm wondering if it not the coil haeting up and losing spark?
