Engine needs valve job

I took my 1992 4runner to a shop thinking it just needed a tune up, only to find out that one of my cylinders isn't firing and I was told I need a valve job.
I didn't really feel like paying $1800 for it and I figured I'd just buy a new engine.

I was thinking though, is there a way I could fix this on my own with out breaking something?

I've narrowed it down to my exhaust valve because there is no gasoline in my oil and it does not backfire.

Any ideas?

Do a leak down test on all cylinders, that will tell you exactly which valve are bad and if your rings are ok as well. Also check your valve adjustment, if it's too tight that will cause a leak as well.

just going to throw this in there but did you check and make sure all your spark plugs were getting spark?
sometimes a wire can fail or the distributor cap and cause a misfire on one cylinder.

So far im only 270 deep parts and machine work. I still have to go get a new belt tensioner, autozone has the kit with the pullies and new idler for 129.99. thats going to put my at 399.99 for all the parts and machine work. when i say machine work i mean i took my heads to have them rebuilt and im doing all the top end gaskets, and timing belt. I think im going to replace all the hoses as well. you will probably spend a little more unless you have a connect for machine work but not to much if you can find an honest shop. just do the removing and replacing of parts your self.

im going to keep looking for a better price on the timing componet set.

Dont feel turned away from working on your own car because a shop wants 1800 to do everything.

I am and im sure others are more than happy to help awnswer questions you might have if you decide fix your truck.

If you do decide that you want to swap your motor how much would you sell your current 3.0 motor for. Id like to build one from the ground up while i use the truck.



*edit* i was cleaning up my room and i totaly forgot the headbolts in my price list until i saw them, 70 forboth sides. in all honesty I didnt buy them tho, my pops picked them up for me the other day.

just checked them out and i was going to buy 3 belts, a coil, and fuel filter. but that place wanted 54 for shipping, damn near doubles the price of auto zone

well im in michigan and there warehouse is in wisconsin so shipping for me is really cheap i didnt know they upped the price to ship out west sorry
